Rev. Schuller, wife resign from church board (Crystal Cathedral)
Orange County Register ^ | March 10, 2012 | ROXANA KOPETMAN

The Rev. Robert H. Schuller and his wife, Arvella, announced "with great sadness" their resignations Saturday from the Crystal Cathedral board of directors.

"We cannot continue to serve on the Board in what has become an adversarial and negative atmosphere, especially since it now seems that it will not be ending anytime soon," Arvella Schuller was quoted as saying in a news release.

Robert Schuller grew the ministry from a congregation that met in a drive-in theater in Orange in 1955 to a thriving megachurch that attracted thousands to its striking building in Garden Grove. Schuller's "Hour of Power" television show drew millions of viewers from across the world.

But a series of financial setbacks led to the cathedral's filing for bankruptcy in October 2010 and the forced sale last month of its 40-acre campus to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. Turmoil in the ministry included resignations and firings of family members, including three in the past week. For at least the next several weeks, the once popular television program is going into reruns.

- snip - The elder Schullers have been embroiled in a legal battle with the board of directors regarding intellectual property and copyright infringement claims as well as back payment for services rendered, Schuller Milner said.

The exact figure for how much is claimed was not available Saturday. Attorneys for the Schullers have made almost weekly offers to the Cathedral's board to settle the claim, which includes a $120,000 annual housing allowance, a $198,000 annual payment in license fees and additional medical benefits, according to Schuller Milner.

The Crystal Cathedral continues its decline. After the bankruptcy, (the creditors apparently have not yet been paid), the sale of the building, resignations/firings of some grown Schuller children and sons- in-law recently, now the elder Schullers have resigned from the board, apparently over money.

I feel sympathy for the members of the local congregation. Their offerings have paid for the church, and they have had no voice in the financial and bankruptcy proceedings.

Why doesn’t he just think positive thoughts and bring in the money he needs?

This is such a sad story. I honestly thought Schuller had died. It seems it went downhill from when he handed the reins to his son.

My mother-in-law set great store by Schuller and the Crystal Cathedral. I can honestly say I’m glad she didn’t live to see this. Although I can also honestly say she would have taken it in stride, people are fallible, etc.

But I’m glad she was spared this one disappointment.

I love you H., and miss you every day.

A church based on a single charismatic pastor always comes to an end.

$120k ANNUAL housing allowance.
That would cover a $2 million mortgage at 4% over 30 years + taxes.

I would think at 86 his house(s) ought to be paid off.

Plus he retired in January of 2006

NEVER!!! could stand his daughters "preaching".

She sounds CONDESCENDING.
Like she's a school teacher talking to preschoolers.
Like a smarmy brown noser.

The only time the messages had any depth, were when the son preached.

Dad didn't like being upstaged, so sonny boy got the boot.

The daughter makes dad look like an intellectual GIANT.

Don't let the door hit you on the tushie on the way out. You exited Christianity decades ago; you must exit a now Christian cathedral. Wonder how it tastes.

Apparently the Crystal Cathedral wasn't.

It was built in 1980 for about $18 million. At the point of sale, they had debts of $43 million. Or more.

We can all do the math and imagine where the funds went, even with the humungous cash cow that this ministry was...
