Does Rick Santorum Have a Satan Problem?
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 2/21/12 | Peter Grier

Parts of a 2008 speech by Rick Santorum have surfaced online, in which he says Satan is subverting great American institutions. Its appearance comes at a time in the campaign when Santorum's rivals are trying to make voters think twice about supporting him.

Does Rick Santorum have a Satan problem? Specifically, is it a political negative for him that the Drudge Report all day Tuesday has highlighted a story about a 2008 speech he gave at Ave Maria University in Florida in which he said America is under assault by Satan?

“Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that [have] so deeply rooted in the American tradition,” Mr. Santorum said in that 2008 speech.

Audio excerpts from the speech indicate that Santorum said Satan had successfully subverted academia first, followed by mainline Protestantism, which he said is “in shambles,” and then the culture. Politics came last.

“The body politic held up pretty well until the last couple of decades,” he said in the speech.

I’d like to see Drudge highlight a speech from Bishop Romney to his LDS brethren.

No. He lives according to his religion.

If you are an atheist you will notice that there is evil in the world. To you, evil might come from faulty brain wiring, ad childhoods, or just bad luck. Call it what you will.

He lives according to his religion. Which is allowed in this country.

It was the original point of this country.

Rick Santorum is speaking truth to a society that has forsaken truth. I agree with every word he says. His philosphy lines up with the Word of God.

I pray every day that God deliver us from the Evil One.

Recognizing the problem is the first step to solving it.

Is this a political negative for Santorum? Absolutely.

The statement will gain him some support. Those folks probably would have eventually gone for Santorum anyway. But it will put off LOTS of people that are currently sitting on the fence.

So it's a net loss, a major net loss.

It will hurt Santorum a little in the primaries, and hurt him a lot in the general election should he get the nomination.

Remember, the R nominee has to fight two opponents, Obama and the relentless MSM attack machine. Don't underestimate the power and ruthlessness of that machine! It ground up Palin, then spit her out.

Santorum: America is being attacked by Satan.
Obama: America is The Great Satan.

(obligatory statement: I am a Newt supporter)

Look, I know what Santorum is trying to say about Satan and Protestantism. But there are millions of people who attend mainline Protestant churches, (maybe just on Easter and Christmas) who are not theologically savvy. I can tell you what they hear when Rick gives such a speech. They hear a Catholic telling them that their church is run by Satan. Now Rick had EVERY right to give that speech. But if he has no idea how that speech comes across to voters, 99% of whom have no idea what he’s talking about, then he may be way too politically tone deaf to beat Obama.

Santorum is the Church Lady and Mr. Rogers rolled into one.

Ditto. But it doesn’t change the fact that many perceive Santorum to be condescendingly preachy. Both Rick and Mitt are perhaps going to be considered to be on a track to godhood, or sainthood. It may be unfair in Rick’s case, but this is politics and half the country are effective atheists.

So now believing two men can marry and women can kill their unborn babies is normal, while belief in the devil is not normal?

What a sad sick world...

Unless, of course, this grows into a full-fledged debate.

Should religion truly become an issue in either the primary or the general election, many more voters are going to agree with Santorum than with Willard’s holy underpants or Barry0’s Rev. Wright racist theology.

I say shine the sun on the subject. Neither Mitt nor the Obama campaign can risk religion as an issue.

America and the world have a Satan problem.

Extending the discussion, however, is NOT a campaign winner.

Truth is not always the friend of political reality.

In traffic I have a rule, “First, get through the intersection.”
You can worry about which lane you’re in later.
If you’re stuck behind 5 cars at the light, you may be in the correct lane, but you’re not making any progress.

Does Rick Santorum Have a Satan Problem?

It's good to see a candidate who believes in the existence of a real Satan as opposed to a candidate, like Obama, who has only been the tool of Satan.
