One of the questions I get a lot is what is my stand on abortion. To be flippant, I don’t stand on abortion, that is a heavy enough load for me to need to sit down and catch my breath.
Flippancy doesn’t really cut it.
I believe that, outside certain specific circumstances, abortion is wrong. I believe it is right for pregnancies which imperil the mother. Triage is an old part of medicine, and you save the one that is most likely to be salvagable. Usually, that is the mother. Rarely, it is the child, yet it happens.
I believe it is right for pregnancies resulting from rape or from incest. If there is a textbook definition of an unwanted child, it is the child of rape or incest, and I don’t want to go there. No decent man does. No woman should be expected to love and care for a child concieved in violence. The ladies - and that is the correct word - who carry to term and put the baby up for adoption or raise it get all my respect. But I would not force them to do so.
The rest - I dislike and disapprove of it. And it means absolutely Jack Shit. I am male. I will never be pregnant. I will never, unless I specifically wish it and go to court to fight for it, be left “holding the baby.” The option is there, but men should butt out of the discussion. We don’t have the skin in the game that women do.
Women have the right to decide their own fate. Their own path. One of the things I got from reading the bible and the Christian fathers is yeah, you can tell most of those guys were not married. They had far too high opinion of the “head of the household” influence.
The newer aspect, that the pill is actually an abortition tool because it prevents implantation of a fertilized zygote, I withhold judgement on. The pill hurts women. I don’t like it at all. It is a wee bit better now, but even 20 years ago it was a thing which caused cancers. A fertilized egg may not implant in the uterine lining, even in the best of circumstances.
Like many who believe in both life and rights, I find this issue a hard one to deal with.
Now that one just makes the most INTERESTING new desktop for me...

I don’t need convincing that abortion is murder, I know it is.
Of course, I know of many people who need to watch it themselves...

I told my 10 year old son a joke. (I was ambivalent about abortion until I heard his heartbeat in the womb a decade ago)
It’s a stupid joke that a lot of people have heard. It was meant as a way to get him to focus on learning in school and in sports and recognizing to the gifts that God gives you.
A guy is drowning in the ocean. He says, “God please help me, save me!”
A rowboat comes along and they say “Get on board, we’ll save you”
The man says “No, save yourself. God will save me.”
Now he is swallowing water and close to death and a helicopter comes along.
“Grab the ladder and we’ll save you.”
“No, save yourself God will save me.”
Now he is dying and gasping for air. A cruise ship comes along.
“Get on the life boat. We’ll take you to safety!”
“No, save yourself. God will save me.”
The guy drowns and goes to Heaven. He is upset that God didn’t save him.
“My Lord, why didn’t you save me?”
God says “I sent you 2 boats and a helicopter! What more did you want?!”
Point being, humans curse war, disease and blame God. Maybe some of those millions of aborted babies were the answer he was trying to send us.
My thanks to you all for the links, information and help and advice. Sometimes it is hard to see the wood for the trees when you have no one to talk things through with you, and the assumptions and propaganda of a life time are not so easy a burden to shift on your own.
I assure you all that abortion on demand is now completely equal to murder in my mind (thank you Salvation and metmom and surroundedbyblue - you were most convincing!).
The only aspect I am still uncomfortable with is the conception by rape. I am STRONGLY in favor of the death penalty for rapists, but wagglebee pointing out the actual tiny yearly number of pregnancies from rape and their use to justify mass murder was a good hard slap too - and his freepmails have helped a lot, I shall look out the book you recommended.
Got a lot of serious thinking to do on contraception still, though. Not the pill or the patch, as those kill a fertilized egg by preventing implantation and that I accept is murder, but barrier methods which prevent fertilization.
Those always seemed to me to spit in God’s eye, yet, while abstinence is actively laughed at and discouraged, they may be required. Many thanks to Tzar for his information on that.
Basically, thank you all for taking the time and helping me out here.
I’m glad we could be of some help. Sometimes a different perspective is all someone needs to see clearly.
Hopefully it will also give you something to use yourself when you encounter someone uncertain on how they feel about the issue as well.
