the prevalent desire to recover earlier forms of Christianity.

Kid whatever the reason you want to ecdorse..

Mormonism was never intended to be the RIGHT “form” of Christianity...

There only has ever been ONE “form”

Only ONE Way...

Only ONE Truth...

ONly ONE Life..

and He is God Himself, the LORD Jesus Christ...

Joey Smith didnt want to go the Jesus “form” of Christianity...

so he made up a whole new religion...

However

The LORD Jesus Christ says to Joey Smith and to rzman, “I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man or woman comes to the Father except by Me.” John 14:6

Actually a reasonable article. The odd thing was how close early Mormonism was to the protestant movement. They were even Trinitarian. Then Smith went off the deep end.

Mormonism developed within the context of American Christian revivals and the prevalent desire to recover earlier forms of Christianity HERESY.

When the opening sentence is based on a faulty premise or if you wish an outright lie...

From the Article: Despite an abundance of contemporary records, the task of tracing the sources of Mormon theology is a difficult one. There are several reasons for this. Among Mormonism's core beliefs are its claim to embody a "restored" Christian gospel, and its claim to continuing revelation. Both of these beliefs tend to obscure lines of demonstrable intellectual influence. Smith dictated revelations without explaining the underlying thought processes, if there were any. Nor did he ever write a carefully argued theological treatise. Moreover, Smith's lack of formal education or theological training makes it difficult to trace the impact of particular authors and writings he may have encountered.

I was highly amused by this paragraph!

The source of original Mormon Theology was none other than Joseph Smith and the often ignored and almost always understated Sidney Rigdon. The task of tracing these men and their influence on LDS writings not difficult in the slightest. Various LDS Prophets have chimed in from time to time with additions, deletions and other corrections, but again, it is easy to spot their well-documented modifications.

The comments concerning obscure ... demonstrable intellectual influence and the lack of an underlying thought process ... if there were any are astonishing accurate for an LDS publication. I commend the author for his candor.

Smith [and Rigdon] were indeed poorly educated with the former supposedly possessing the equivalent of completion of third grade schooling and the latter even less. Smith had absolutely no formal theological training whatsoever, and indicated absolutely no interest in in the subject. Rigdon completed a three month training session of unknown content at Clark's farm in New Sewickley, Pennsylvania and thereafter fancied himself an expert theologian. He wasn't!

It should be recalled that the Book of Abraham was derived from an Egyptian papyrus scroll known as the Book of Breathings, supposed translated using a peep stone. The Book of Mormon was clearly plagiarized from Ethan Smith's (no relation) fictional account of Jews migrating to the New World in his novel titled View of the Hebrews, (according to LDS historian, B H Roberts). Thus, the question of the impact of particular authors and writings [they] may have encountered becomes laughably easy.

Of course, the offshoot of the lack of theological reasoning before pronouncement is exactly why Mormons are now saddled with dozens of clear cut contradictions in scripture. For example, according to this SOURCE, a few of the many examples include:

Unfortunately for LDS apologists, it is impossible to explain away these discrepancies. One cannot argue that scripture is unimpugnable when, in fact, it impugns itself.

Therefore, it is easy to argue that theology does have a sound purpose in a religion and that a lack of sound theology is ... revealing.

Bottom Line: Interesting article. Thanks for posting.

A major impetus to the 2nd Great Awakening was the French Revolution, in which French rationalism showed the cloven hoof. But even before that, evangelicalism had revived during the events leading up to the American revolution. Methodism also began to have an impact, the irony being that Wesley was a Tory hostile to the Revolution but his followers were for it. In America, it became a totally lay movement. When he ran for President in 1800, Jefferson had to do what he could to blunt the charges of atheism. French infidelity spurred on both a Catholic revival in France and Evangelicanism isn England and America.

Joseph Smith basically strung a bunch of incoherent thoughts together to justify his okaying the rape of young girls, and not only that, he gave permission for other men to rape young girls under the pretense of phony beliefs...he was a con man before he became a religious con man....

I'll vote for Romney if he s the candidate... and I like the Mormons I know for the most part...

but the basis of this "religion" is trash, similar to Ron Hubbard...

Go look up the foundings of Oneida Silversmiths and you'll see that Smith wasn't the only one to make up things as they go, especially if it allowed for sexual promiscuity...this approach was popular in upstate NY at that time....I guess Smith was just the boldest of all the con men, actually saying that his god wanted men to be promiscuous with many young girls.. not just with other adults....

wake up people....wake up....
