Journalists urged to allow Mormons to define themselves
Deseret News ^ | December 8, 2011 | Joseph Walker

WASHINGTON, D.C. — News reporters and editors from around the country were urged to allow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to define themselves rather than to exclusively look to sources outside the church for definitions of what it means to be a Mormon or to explain LDS doctrine or history.

"Define us by who we are and by our central beliefs rather than who we are not or by obscure or irrelevant beliefs," Michael R. Otterson, managing director of public affairs for the LDS Church, said during a Thursday morning session of a conference called, "Politics and Religion: Getting it Right in 2012."

--snip--

Otterson identified for the journalists what he considered the five most common stereotypes of members of the LDS Church — that they are not Christian, that they belong to a cult, that they are insular and secretive, that they are weird and that they practice polygamy.

--snip--

Otterson explained that members of the church are troubled when they are described as not Christian "because that suggests we are not followers of Jesus Christ, and Christ's divinity is a foundational belief in our faith."

Jesus Christ Himself taught us how to pray. Who was He praying to? Himself? He taught us to pray: “Our Father who art in Heaven . . . “ To whom was Jesus speaking when He was dying on the Cross? To whom was Jesus praying in the Garden while the disciples slept?

Jesus Christ is so wonderful, beautiful, glorious. I love Him and I wish you would stop saying stuff about my Savior that is not true.

As I said, I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Three different functions but one in purpose. Why is that controversial?
Please stop misrepresenting my faith. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Stop misrepresenting your faith SD. Three different GODS (not 'functions') - polytheism. The Trinity is a God revealed concept, fully supported by scripture. Mormon polytheism is a man made concept - fully REJECTED by scripture.

From the article: Otterson identified for the journalists what he considered the five most common stereotypes of members of the LDS Church — that they are not Christian...

Otterson is just trying to create a "stereotype" that they are to be considered "Christian."

Just posted -- a thread that addresses this:
If Mormonism is 'anti-Christian,' then how can it be considered 'Christian?'

The Trinity is a man-made concept. What I said is I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Deal with it.

Repeat: “Christ’s divinity is a foundational belief in our faith.”

Would you please stop spreading falsehoods about my Savior. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

We are dealing with it. In so doing I notice you avoid my question.

Is Christ God?

Does he have a divine nature the same as the Father?

“Is Christ God?”

Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God; I worship and adore Him; He is my Savior and the Savior of the whole world. He suffered and died to save me from my sins. Jesus Christ is the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament; Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of the New Testament; the Holy Ghost ever lives to lead us to a closer relationship with the Father and the Son.

Do you think Peter was lying about this? “Thou art the Christ the Son of the Living God.”

What I said is I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Deal with it.

Oh dealt with over and over again dear SD. Mormon doctrine states a belief in three separate 'gods'. Do you want to deny that or continue the obfuscation SD? Hint - its called polytheism. Want a further hint - polytheism is soundly rejected by the bible. Want another hint - polytheism is rejected by the bom. See, I'm not the one who isn't 'dealing' with it SD.

Lets see - man made concepts. You mean like the art of translation by stuffing your face into a hat to look at a smooth stone - the same method used to look for buried treasure - do you mean that kind of man-made concept?

Man made concept - you mean special underware with masonic symbols that originated with smith - and nonexistent in either the bible or the bom? Man made concepts like the way into heaven is governed by secret handshakes and passwords - those kinds of 'man-made' concepts SD?

INDEED, you have a LOT to deal with.

The true gospel of Jesus Christ is far simplier and far more effective than trying to pay off your 'salvation' by your works SD. Remember how the God views those kinds of works?

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

filthy rags SD - essentially menstrual cloths - the MOST unclean thing a Jew could conceive of. That's how God views your works and man-made concepts SD.

“Is Christ God?”

Dodging the real issue like Superman to kryptonite. Notice how SD ignores this part

Does he have a divine nature the same as the Father?

And why would that be? Is SD afraid to utter the "P" word?

Sandy, your deceit is showing out from under your LDS skirt. The quote in post #98 is not ‘taken out of context’. It is a clear assertion int he spirit of antichrist. You know it but have chosen totry and deceive readers into thinking that quote is somehow less devilish is read int he context of the utterance. I listed the JD source date and number, why don’t you show us how the spirit of antichrist will not be upon the utterance if ‘read in context’? You’re supposedly a lawyer, give it a try. BUT if you cannot whitewash the assertion so it is not serving the spirit of antichrist then why not renounce the demonic cult into which you’ve tossed your immortal soul?

Many people wonder about “the other side of the veil” - Eye has not seen nor ear heard . . . There are many mansions prepared for those who love the Lord. You exactly what form these mansions will take? Wow! You are divine already.

As for Kolob - I don’t think you should make fun of it. I don’t know what you get out of trashing my faith.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKM8rK0hZYI&feature=related

In the great hymn “How Great Thou Art” (Billy Graham’s favorite) there’s a line “Oh, Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made” - all the worlds (plural).

Saundra, I didn't write this headline. A Mormon did. Nor did I write this article. A Mormon did.

If you want to accuse fellow Mormons of trashing the Mormon "faith," be my guest.

Do not accuse another Freeper of telling a lie, it attributes motive, the intent to deceive. It is "making it personal."

Words such as "false" "error" "wrong" do not attribute motive.

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

we have had a discussion on this in the past...

The Holy Ghost does not “ever live”

Cutting and pasting from FARMS/FAIR/Ldsorg just illuminates your ignorance...

you need to go to a Christian bookstore and buy a Bible...

and read it...

there is no verse in the Christian Bible to back up your lies about the Holy Spirit...

There is no way that SD is a lawyer.

Well she does obfuscate with wordy responses...

So it is possible, but there is no way she got out of logic class.
