A dog in the nativity scene is not only plausible but probably more accurate than one without a dog. A lab may not be the best choice, though. Odds are good that our Lord would have seen a
Canaan Dog
The Canaan Dog is a herding and flock guardian dog native to the Middle East.

We do the Nativity Play that precedes Christmas Eve Mass.
We have had a sheepdog (webkinz) for three years. My daughter campaigned for it.
“If you have shepherds, you have sheepdogs.” she told us.
Guess she was right.

It is still on the Christ Child, but this dog, but to just to remind you, the Christ Child came as the new Adam with a animal feed box as his first bed.
