Presbyterian Church’s Ordination of Gays Bittersweet {Reformed, always reforming}

Before returning to New England for the second time, I served two African American Presbyterian Churches. And during that time I never thought, two decades ago, that the entire church body would change its position on LGBTQ worshippers.

But a historic yet bittersweet moment happened on October 8th in the Presbyterian Church (USA).

And the moment didn’t happened without a long and arduous struggle against the church’s ecclesiastical heterosexism.

After decades of open struggle with the church’s recalcitrant attitude and discrimination against its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) worshippers who wanted to serve as pastors, elders or deacons, the Presbyterian Church (USA), known as the more liberal and tolerant branch of the denomination, finally conducted its first openly gay ordination.

...As a church that is borne out of a liberal Protestant Christian tradition, the Presbyterian Church’s problem with its LGBTQ worshippers is a history of how it not only broke the backs and souls of the many who wanted to serve, but also how the church recklessly discarded the gifts we bring.

...as a church that proudly touts itself as “reformed and always reforming,” when it came to all things LGBTQ prior to this recent Amendment, the church was not only losing its theological ground of being one that affirms diversity without divisiveness, but it was also losing its public face of inclusion.

And NFP, as it is practiced in the real world.

isn’t it amazing that a simple question can’t be answered, even when a claim of three years of study is made.

reminds me of ever learning and never coming to the truth.

"reminds me of ever learning and never coming to the truth."

Perhaps you are familiar with this problem. It was not my situation.

that’s yet to be proven since the proof is in the pudding, and so far, no pudding has been produced.

no one wants to admit without the Catholic sacred tradition, we would have no idea of what books belong in the canon and which do not. to admit that, is to logically lead one to a path their hatred for the Church will not allow them to follow. so silence fills the void, but they know the truth, even if they can’t admit it publicly. must be a sad existence.

"no one wants to admit without the Catholic sacred tradition, we would have no idea of what books belong in the canon"

Shouldn't this give you a clue? If no one will admit it, it is likely because it simply isn't true. Roman propaganda (unbroken chains of popes, purgatory, indulgences, sacerdotalism, etc.) can't create reality, my FRiend.

That is a pretty good comeback. Better than my pudding on the shirt. Gotta run, mom's calling.

Why do you twist my words? I said sex that purposely excludes the potential for procreation is hedonism. Particularly sterilization and contraceptive use. People who might be sterile by medical causes, post menopause etc are not chosen, they are natural and beyond the control of the individuals.

And yet, why couldn’t they form their OWN “church” — the “Church of gays”? Why try and force the Presbyterians, Episcopalians etc. to accept this perversion?

“And yet, why couldn’t they form their OWN “church” — the “Church of gays”? Why try and force the Presbyterians, Episcopalians etc. to accept this perversion?”

The ELCA, many Pres, and most Episcopalians tend to be liberal first and Christian second. This is true with Jews too. Liberal first, Jewish second.

It’s an observation. Many of my conservative Jewish friends have tried to explain the phenomenon of why Jews back a party who openly supports Hamas. They were libs first.

I see it in the ELCA every day. You don’t really have to accept Christ, because Christ accepts you, and just the way you are. Satan? Not even mentioned during baptisms any more.

The Bible isn’t even a guideline any more, and it stopped being a rule in 1979. Accepting something we can’t understand, and that homosexuals can’t control, feels like what Jesus would do, so we do it.

I asked, “Along that same line of logic, shouldn’t we start an outreach to the pedophile community? If anyone needed Christ, its them, and they fit your profile: 1)Understand pedophiles - no. 2) Pedophiles out of control - check.”

The reply: “Pedophiles are sick. Homosexuals aren’t.”

Nope, the urge to ram your penis up another man’s rectum comes natural to all woodland creatures, apparently.

In the end, you arrive at the realization that you shouldn’t wrestle pigs.

how is that possible? The Baptismal rite consists of

Celebrant: Do you reject Satan, and all his works, and all his empty promises?
all: I do
