VATICAN CITYThe Vatican has condemned Saturday’s violent clashes in central Rome including an attack by protesters on a church in which a crucifix and a statue of the Virgin Mary were destroyed.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said he “condemned the violence and the fact that a church was desecrated by some protesters who broke in and destroyed some images.” He referred to the clashes in Rome as “horrific.”
The 18th-century church of Santi Marcellino and Pietro is near St John Lateran square where much of Saturday’s violence occurred.
“When I came down, I saw the entrance door had been smashed in,” the church’s parish priest, Father Giuseppe Ciucci, was quoted by Italian media as saying.
“The Virgin Mary’s statue, which was at the entrance, had been taken away and I saw it had been thrown into the street and smashed,” he said.
“I went into the sacristy and I saw the door there was also destroyed. The large crucifix at the entrance had been vandalized,” he added.
Hundreds of protesters torched cars, smashed banks and hurled rocks at police during the clashes. Tens of thousands of people had been protesting against government cutbacks and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
My heart weeps to see this image.
Father, forgive the ones of your Heart who know not what they do.
A demonstrator celebrates as a Carabinieri police vehicle burns during a demonstration of the "Indignant" group in Rome on Saturday.
May God have MERCY on the protesters because they WILL answer to the King of King.
Coming soon to a city near you. Notice how mobs in Western European countries never attack mosques.
That photo makes my heart hurt.
So, they want to tear down Christ and shatter Mary. That speaks volumes about where this is coming from.
They know that the mosques have the ability and will to strike back 10-fold, and would decimate them.
We will be in Rome on Tuesday.....yikes.
The protestors are protesting their God and Mother? Good luck with that.
BTW, your link led me to another,
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/76893/there%e2%80%99s-no-apocalypse-in-fatima%e2%80%99s-3rd-secret
which can only lead one to a conclusion opposite from the title: “Theres no apocalypse in Fatimas 3rd secret”
Now that pisses me off.
destructive no good b@$t@rds filled with nothing by hate — no respect, no decency — parasites
People need to scour the list of groups getting grants from the commingling CCHD to see which ones have posted notes of support for the “occupy” movement that is now attacking churches.
Am I on your ping list? Please add me if I’m not.
Who, no idea how “upcoming” got mutilated into that word above-lol
The Communist Party is still pretty strong in Italy. No question they’ve sent their activists into the streets to take advantage of this moment. Their hatred of the Church is of long standing.
Same here, BTW. The core of these Occupations is the hard left in all its permutations, including the Community Organizer In Chief.
One thing it tells me is they know Protestants aren't a threat. Protestants are either cowering on the sidelines collecting "Precious Moments" trinkets while patting themselves on the back for having a queer as their Pastor, or they have their noses in books about how the big extraction will snatch them all out of harms way before the battle gets much worse.
The other thing it tells me is that they recognize Iz Lame as fellow fascists and their natural ally the same way Hitler did.
Awful - bunch of sick souls, very sick souls.
Same beast, different name.
