Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

Silly man...The judge has already made the decision for Christians...I only acknowledge it...
And if you are wrong, then you prate about something that only Almighty God can dispense. Name it and claim it. Blab it and grab it. Iscool, from what you post, you are not identifiable as Christian, so that eliminates you from the pool.
If you are one of the sheep, you have eternal life right now...
Unless the Master calls me one of His, I am not. Unlike the ruins of the Reformation which elevated man over God and caused him to define his own salvation.
Those who wait to see if their works were good enough to get them to heaven are not one of the sheep and will find out that their works could never have been good enough...They will be cast into outer darkness...
Matthew 25 tells us who will be cast into outer darkness. Oh, that's right. You tell us that the Gospels are not for Christians. So why are you posting John 10 to me? Are you lying for the Lord again?
I think that the mushroom effect of this post is indeed magical.

Ah, we have overturned the rock and a loathsome scuttling post emerges. Told you. There are some people to whom menstruation is not only fascinatingly forbidden and sordid, but simply fascinating. I’m awaiting photographs next.
We are as happy as a beggar who sees his most generous patron coming, the one we told all the other beggars was wonderfully generous.
We cannot but ask, but we ask with joy because he so generously and reliably responds to our pleas.
He is generous and merciful; I find it interesting comparing the folks who pray for mercy versus those whom claim justice. The attitude is quite different.
Anne Askew (née Anne Ayscough, married name Anne Kyme) (1520[1] 16 July 1546) was an English poet and Protestant who was condemned as a heretic. She is the only woman on record to have been tortured in the Tower of London before being burnt at the stake.
Catholics use Revelation 12 as a base for the teachings about Mary. They use this verse to get you to believe that Mary is the Queen of Heaven. Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
Then they use the following verse as their evidence.
Revelation 12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
Then they skip some verses and use verse five to reinforce their contention that this is talking about Mary.
Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
They claim the following verse is when Joseph and Mary took Jesus into Egypt to escape King Herod.
Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
They use these verses to persuade people that they somehow have the secrets handed down from the Apostles that no other group of people have. It helps reinforce the notion that the Popes are successors to the Apostles. Without those two things the Catholic Church would be shown to be a cult. Without those two things there would be no power for the leadership in the Catholic Church.
But there is a problem with the interpretation of this chapter and that is that the woman in verse one is not talking about Mary. Their problems start already in the first chapter of Revelation as the entire book of revelation is dealing mainly with the time period of the tribulation. So we need to keep that in mind throughout Revelation. But we will just deal with the twelfth chapter here. The third verse already begins to unravel their version of scripture.
Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
We will see that red dragon again later. That red dragon is Satan and is used 13 times in Revelation. Satan took a third of the Angels with him and cast them down to the earth. Then he stood before the woman. Here is where their failure begins to become obvious. Notice that they are now on the earth. If the woman is supposedly Mary how did she get back to earth if she is in heaven as the queen?
Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
Now we will go to verse five and start being honest with interpretation. Its talking about the woman being the nation of Israel. Jesus was after all a Jew. It was the nation of Israel that birthed Jesus.
Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
Now we come to verse 6 where we can begin to tie it in with the prophecy of Daniel of the tribulation period.
Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
There you have the restored nation of Israel being protected for the last half of the tribulation otherwise known as the great tribulation or Jacobs trouble.
So you see, the entire Catholic Church is built on false interpretation of scripture. Was it a deliberate scam to gain control? Was it just human error that fed on itself? Was it Gods plan all along to allow Satan to use an earthly institution? Some say the Catholic Church is the Whore of Revelation. Only time will tell. Come quickly Lord Jesus.
Indeed, Paul was inspired to exhort Christians in the way of life that would bring glory to God and help them to live peaceable lives that honor the Lord who bought them and to finish their race with actions that pleased God. But, he was NOT telling them that they HAD to do these things to be saved. If that was the case, he would have contradicted his own writings earlier in the same epistle as well as others.
The great cloud of witnesses are many. They are those around us who see our testimony in action and the angels. Do you believe it is speaking of the saints only that are already in heaven with the Lord? Do you have any Scripture to prove it?

The take I have is that you really have a hard time using scripture to discuss your beliefs. I sense you stay away from Catholic Church teaching for fear of being viewed as a follower of Churchianity. You keep going back to your pejoratives, invectives, obfuscation and deflections to somehow stay away from defending your beliefs. Why?
It says more about you than us.
That's really twisted.
As a "Southern" lady, I think it is necessary to send a thank you note, but even if I didn't, the giver does not have a right to take back the gift. That would be rude! ;o)
Thats a fact.
Its a shame you limited your research to the internet. If you had actually cracked a book you might learn that everything you know about Anne Askew is from what she apparently wrote posthumusly.
I would recommend you get a copy of Translating Askew: The Textual Remains of a Sixteenth-Century Heretic and Saint by THERESA D. KEMP. In it she quotes:
"On 24 May 1546, Henry VIII's Privy Council sent two yeomen of the Chamber with "letters to oone [Thomas] Kyme and his wief for their apparance within x [i.e., ten] dayes after receipt." Had the matter been settled simply when they appeared, we might have known little more about the identity of the nameless wife of Thomas Kyme. But this "wief" was already well known to the authorities -- it was at least her third encounter with the law, including a two-week long imprisonment during which time she was interrogated about her religious beliefs. Because of her continuing confrontations with conservative ecclesiastic and state authorities connected with the late Henrician court, a particular and contradictory aspect of her identity survives in the various documents relating to her trials and execution by fire on 16 July 1546 at the age of twenty-five."
Certainly a thank you is appropriate and I do thank God regularly.
Like every time I think of where I’d be without Him.
And you’re right. A gift is a gift and if accepted by the recipient is theirs, regardless of the level of gratitude expressed.
It is True ..easily understood and Truth itself.
Ha Ha laughing - Your are correct. Give me the Tarot ...
I can see some of what is good in your position. I think you may not see why reasonable and pious people could be Catholic. This sort of obstructs mutual understanding.
