My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

You can go to any foreign third world country who practice witchcraft, voodoo, and a host of other heathen practices and find their rituals combined within their catholic churches. The will not put them aside and the catholic leadership allows it....and yet continues to acknowledge these churches as catholic christian churches.

All part of the 1.2 billion faithful, no doubt.

It helps to remember who reigns at the Right Hand of God.

Jesus ascended to heaven in His Human body. Not separate from it.

but she is the mother of all of Jesus who IS Jesus Christ, who IS God the Son of God.

Jesus was the manifestation of God in the flesh...Jesus was the manifestation of God in a fleshy appearance in the OT being called the angel of the Lord...

Was Jesus the Son of God from eternity, or the physical manifestation of the Trinity???

Kind of difficult to call Mary the Mother of the God who existed from eternity...We see in the scriptures that the flesh of Jesus died...I can't see where God died...

Many of us non Catholics believe we have a body, a soul and a spirit as the scripture tells us...

Our soul is alive forever...Our body dies and falls off the soul but the soul never dies...

I believe the same happened to Jesus...Just as Paul tells us that at the redemption, bodies will come out of the grave and be reunited with their souls that have risen previously...

The Catholic version sounds good if one wants to venerate Mary but it's no where to be found in scripture...

This is at least 5,000 word paper stuff, which is why I end up being so elliptical.

And on a different tangent . . .

Elliptical pool tables are fun.

God made us individuals and not carbon copies of each other.

I don’t see the point in *Christianizing* (which IMO is really Westernizing and a church/cultural thing) anyone.

People need to be themselves, not somebody else. Everybody else is already taken. We need to be what God made us to be and do what HE has for us to do.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED.

Though for some of us . . . that carries more interesting responses automatically, than for others.

No Proddy I know of is

putting the authentic Mary down in the least.

We do seek to trash wholesale the horrific UNBIBLICAL HERETICAL IDOLATROUS elevations

the Vatican Ishtar-Mary Goddess cult headquartered in the Vatican has raised her to . . . in their own minds, of course . . . having nothing whatsoever to do with reality at all—much less TRULY SPIRITUAL REALITIES.

CNN ran a story last night on the opposition of the mosque being built near Murfreesboro, TN. It was a Muslim friendly piece and made the citizens who protested it look like rednecks and intolerant hicks.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend....

Mothers do not give birth to natures. They give birth to persons. She gave birth to a person who was God. She is the mother of the person she gave birth to. That person was God. She is the mother of God.

You just shot yourself in the foot with that one, MD.

Mary gave birth to the person who was the Christ, who was God in nature but not God as a person, therefore by your own reasoning, could not have given birth to God.

If Jesus was GOD, the person, then He was confined to a human body for His sojourn on earth and when He was crucified, the Romans crucified GOD. God died.

Is that what you're really saying because it sure sounds like it. Otherwise, it is treating Jesus as if that is all of God that there is.

Yes, Christ reigns at the right hand of the Father, but not in His Human body. When the Father raised Christ from the dead, Christ put on His eternal, glorified body. If He was still in His Human body, could He have walked through walls at this point?

No, just double standards, apparently.

I confess, the RC’s are hands down the supreme mortal experts on DOUBLE STANDARDS, bar none!

Exactly what I was thinking....

It was A body, but not the human one which died and was buried.

One says I'm not worshiping (Greek proskuneo) but rather showing respect, obeisance (Greek proskuneo) and yet onlookers might well ask why the Hebrews refused to bow down before the Babylonian image set up and they were tossed into a furnace over. (Dan. Chapter 3)

Could they have not said it was only respect as bowing down before a superior was often done as Lot did to the two angels that came to him at Sodom?

Paul explained that how onlookers, especially our brothers, viewed our actions had to be taken into account.

To the Corinthian Christians Paul wrote about eating meat that been used for sacrifice to idols but then either eaten in a temple or sold later in a meat market. (1 Cor,. Chapters 8, 10)

Could our actions, EVEN IF PERMITTED, be a cause of spiritual damage to others? The question was the eating of meat but there is a principle involved beyond that question.

And it's not one I've seen mentioned overmuch.

>>Absence in Scripture does not mean something did not happen. Can we agree on that? Sure, I knew we could.<<

A doctrine as central to the RCC as the doctrines surrounding Mary is not in scripture and it’s understandable? Are you kidding me?

Is there scripture showing Jesus as God and also as man? Of course there is.

Was Jesus God?

The book of Hebrews gives us this "But of the Son He says, 'Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever". Thomas testifies that He is God: John 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God. Then look at other parts of scripture testifying to the fact that Jesus is truly God and has all the attributes of God. Colossians 1:16, John 1:1, John 8:58, Matthew 28:18, Revelation 1:8. There are specific texts telling us that Jesus is indeed God.

Was Jesus also man in the flesh?

1 John 4:2 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 2 John 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. He was born “under the Law” as in born in the flesh. Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law.

>>We take it on faith don’t we?<<

We believe it because we are told in scripture as I have just showed you.

>>If one does not know the exegesis accepted by all Christians, one might be swayed by others to different beliefs. That is how people become Mormons, JW, Unitarians and other more obscure sects or cults.<<

You mean like cults teaching something that we are not able to “search the scriptures to see if is true”? You mean like a guy named Smith saying he heard from God and teaches something that isn’t in the Bible or like the Pope teaching Mary was assumed into heaven which isn’t in the Bible?

>>As I said, I can go down this path and give you Scriptures which I believe support the Church’s teachings on those doctrines.<<

Then do it.

Actually, if you’ve ever bothered to really read what quix wrote, that’s exactly what he SAID and it’s not mind reading to say that that is what quix thinks when he’s said as much.

It’s disingenuous to accuse someone of mind reading when it’s simply a matter of having good reading comprehension skills.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED.

Unless, of course . . . folks are merely scraping the bottom of the barrel of no evidence . . . vainly trying to concoct some excuse to be mean-spirited and nasty.
