The Seal of Confession and The Virtue of Religion The Hermeneutic of Continuity

So is it hermeneutically sealed?

The confessional seal is the absolute rock bottom foundation of the church's political power. By guaranteeing that your secrets were safe, there was at least one person who knew ALL the secrets, and we all know that information is power.

Don't forget that 1000 years ago, the pope was a "general" leading his very own papal army. The "seal" is a holdover from that era when it meant military intelligence.

The church has never been about community service, it's always been about power.

Fr. Tim Finnegan?

I hope he lives a long, happy and holy life, but I hope I get to attend his wake.

I heard about it, once ...

Absolutely correct ... the power to save and sanctify souls.

"You forgot the < sarc> tags."

That wasn't sarcasm.

Perhaps it was more like sarchasm (The distance between you and other folk that just don't get it).

"You can tell by all the albino monk assasssins."

They still have those ??

When I saw "The Da Vinci Code" I figured they'd all be driven underground. It would appear from your statement that they started a recruiting drive.

P.S. It's "assassins" unless of course you were being clever.

That's too bad. I had no idea there was anybody on this forum stupid enough to actually take that post seriously.

Your profile page makes much of worrying about grammatical and syntactical errors.

I'd suggest that you concern yourself more with correction of factual errors. Post #3 is erroneous from beginning to end.

Glad I could help. Wait until the subject gets to communion, I got great material there.

No, I reckon my “s” key hitting finger just got stuck.

They could just cut out the middle men and have only albino monk assassins hear confessions. Think of the ultimate power the Church could wield then!

Oh, there's more than a few of us around and stupid is not the word we use. We prefer to say "sane".

"Your profile page makes much of worrying about grammatical and syntactical errors."

Yes, it does but that's ok, I think you're safe (for now).

"I'd suggest that you concern yourself more with correction of factual errors. Post #3 is erroneous from beginning to end."

Just as a courtesy to you, I've gone back over that post and fail to find any errors. The post reflects my true beliefs and requires no correction. But thank you for caring.

BTDT. I still have a sticking shift key from reading some post here and spewing a soda on my keyboard.

"They could just cut out the middle men and have only albino monk assassins hear confessions. Think of the ultimate power the Church could wield then!"

That almost makes sense, in a weird hollywood sort of way, but I think it's ALL about the middle man, else your "humint" would suffer.

We prefer to say "sane".

You can say anything you like. That doesn't make it true.

I've gone back over that post and fail to find any errors.

I'm not surprised that you couldn't find the errors.

The post reflects my true belief

I have no doubt of that. The problem we have, here, is that your "true belief" bears only an opposite relationship to objective fact. This, interestingly enough, has some bearing on the concept of sanity. Consider the case of the man who truly believes that the moon is made of green cheese.

the power to save and sanctify souls.

Is God's work thru the Holy Spirit.....the church should "reflect" the 'results' in and of the people who attend. The Church itself does 'not' weld that power.....it is His.

Crazy people always think they're sane. Calling yourself "sane" doesn't make it true. Sanity is having a belief system that corresponds to objective reality. Post #3 is evidence that your belief system fails that test.

It's God's work through the Holy Spirit poured out through his Church. It's delegated power, of course, purely and only delegated power, but still power.

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”-- Acts 1:8
