In Texas, young Hindus want to Americanize ancient faith
CNN.com ^ | 10 July 2011 | Dan Gilgoff

In many ways, 29-year-old Rishi Bhutada is a traditional Hindu, not so different from his Indian-born parents.

An officer at his dad’s pipefitting company, Texas-born Bhutada had an arranged marriage in India three years ago and then brought his wife back to his hometown, where they recently welcomed a son.

Bhutada is a strict vegetarian and avoids alcohol, as do many observant Hindus.

And the dashboard of his Toyota Prius is adorned with a small metal statue of Ganesh, an elephant-headed Hindu god known as the remover of obstacles. Bhutada prays to it each morning before leaving his driveway.

And yet Bhutada is a different kind of Hindu than his mom and dad.

His parents were part of a major wave of Indians who arrived in the U.S. in the 1960s and ’70s and focused their religious lives on building a community of believers and temples around Houston, which was then a Hindu wilderness.

Bhutada, by contrast, wants his religion to step out from that now-well-established Hindu hive to engage the broader culture.

So, was she hot? Or at least decent...? many Indian women are beautiful.

I guess there is some more stuff in the article but I lost interest...

If they want respect, they’d better start shooting people and blowing things up.

Then the libs won’t be able to do enough for them.

One of my best buds in high school was Punjabi. He actually had an arranged marriage with another family from New Delhi. When we asked what was the exchange from the each side, he said “15 goats, 6 sheep, (I think 9) cows and 5 monkeys”.

We scratched our heads about the monkeys, then he explained they worship the monkeys supposedly and is deified. Punjabis aren’t as anal religiously as the Sikhs but one thing we hated was the strong stench of curry. It was pouring out of his clothes..

That’s pretty cool! They don’t seem to have the same Mooselimb “draw a picture of Mohammed and I KEEL you” mentality.

one thing we hated was the strong stench of curry.

Smells like food to me. Same thing with kim-chee.

I'm Texas bred and borne, but I have to agree that Americans today can be provencial about their food tastes. You know, the german, french, russian, mexican, nordic, and Lutheran foods that Americans eat.

We don't have a cultural food (except knock-off boxed crap that is based on other cultures).

Our culture is too young. And all food preferences are passed on culturally.

My 2 cents worth about food preferences as a former food professional. ;)

“Ganesh, an elephant-headed Hindu god known as the remover of obstacles.”

A God of prosperity.

Worshippers of Ganesh make for natural Republicans!

The first pic didn’t resolve, but the second... LORD HAVE MERCY!

IIRC, the “Most Beautiful Woman In the World” a few years ago was Indian.

And I worked with an absolutely captivating Indian lady for a distracting year or so...

I can only say that it is a good thing I married the most beautiful woman in the world, else these lovely ladies would send my eyes askance.

Mrs. FD shames all these women, trust me :) Seriously, Mrs. FD has an hourglass figure that women 1/2 her age would kill for. The fact she works out 20+ hours a week between solid exercise and dance probably helps that...

(I am still working on a “look only license” with the Mrs. but I think it is conditional only...)

:)
