The Rev. Robert Schuller Reportedly Ousted from Crystal Cathedral Ministries

The Rev. Robert H. Schuller has been ousted from Crystal Cathedral Ministries, the Ocean County Register reports.

Schuller, 84, who began his ministry in an Orange, Calif., drive-in theater more than 50 years ago, was voted off the board of the Crystal Ministries, which has been plagued by financial problems and familial discord, according to the paper.

Schuller’s son, who was forced from the board three years ago, says his father wanted to enlarge the board, a move that did not sit well with others.

"It's a very sad day and unfortunately, I know how that feels," the younger Schuller said.

According to the paper, the church's financial travails, including a significant drop in donations and dwindling membership, culminated in its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The church still owes about $7.5 million to unsecured creditors, many of whom are vendors for the cathedral's "Glory of Christmas" pageant. According to a reorganization plan filed by the church last month, they have an offer from Irvine, Calif., developer, Greenlaw Partners LLC, to buy the core buildings for $46 million.

Robert H. Schuller has been at odds with his daughters over how they have chosen to run the church. The cathedral recently switched over from a traditional worship format to a Gospel-style choir -- much to the chagrin of many long-time members. Sheila Schuller Coleman also required choir members to sign a covenant acknowledging Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and the belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

The older Schuller publicly lashed out at the contract saying everyone is welcome in the church. Phillip Johnson, the architect who constructed the cathedral's iconic glass sanctuary, was an openly gay man.

My parents loved Schuller. I thought he was a plastic banana.

That would be Orange County Register....

Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember when it was the Santa Ana Register.

Used to be a pretty conservative rag.....But I don't live there anymore, so I don't really know.

$7.5 million? They might think about an old fashion Christmas program put together and performed by members of the church and their children. That is the Glory of Christmas.

Without knowing any more than that about how the daughters want to run the church, I’d say they are trying to drag the church into compliance with THE SCRIPTURES! And as to the architect being gay: What do the SCRIPTURES say?

1st Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1st Corinthians 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Case closed.

They had a libertarian type editorial policy when my wife and i worked for Freedom here in Texas. They seem to have fared better than much of their competition these days.

Sounds like the daughter had at least two good ideas. If Pop Schuller didn't like those requirements he's more liberal than I thought he was.

Good point on unity. Some of the early Christians met in catacombs and in homes while in hiding from the authorities. The were in one accord and God moved amongst them with great power. Today we have Christians fighting over money, positions, titles, and who will own the giant edifices they’ve constructed.

A long time ago, we took a family trip to the left coast.

We visited the Crystal Cathedral during off-hours.

We were in the middle of the sanctuary looking around. My dad was looking up as a greeter with extended hand and big smile approached us from behind him. Just then my dad said "I hate to say it, but Dr. Schuller's windows are dirty". I watched that greeter pull in his hand and go to a scowl in about two milliseconds!

Keep in mind, he didn't say it TO a greeter, or even realize the guy was approaching. The greeter was coming up from behind him. I was in position to see the whole thing. Besides, at that particular time, Dr. Schuller's ceiling panels WERE FILTHY. I was there.
