Putting a "gap" between the first and second day is extra-biblical. It is an assumption made without support of the text.

It is based on scripture...God tells us much of creation was made after its kind...Birds made after Gen. 1:2 were made like the birds before Gen. 1:2...The only thing that was made differently was man...For the first time, God created a being in His image, man...
God tells Adam to 'replenish' the earth...That means to fill again...
There's plenty of scripture to support this idea...
