I came today..., former Utah governor Jon Huntsman Jr. told the crowd in a downtown Washington ballroom Friday, ...to introduce myself and my family.
There was...nothing simple about it. The audience..was...politically oriented Christian conservatives. Huntsman...is a Mormon.

The other Mormon in the race...Mitt Romney...also addressed the group. But where Huntsman made overt references to God, Romney made none. Instead, he emphasized economic themes...

Conservative Christians constitute a crucial part of the GOP base, one that can win elections if they are motivated to turn out. They represented as much as a third of all those who showed up to vote in the 2010 election...according to analyses of exit polls.

...Conservative Christians have deep theological differences with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some evangelical ministers even preach that Mormonism is a cult.
A Pew Research Center poll released Thursday showed how this could be a problem. While one in four of the 1,509 surveyed overall said they would be less likely to support a presidential candidate if he or she is a Mormon, the percentage among white evangelical respondents was 34 percent the highest of any religious group. By comparison, only 19 percent of Catholics and white mainline Protestants said they would be more reluctant to support a Mormon.
...Huntsman...had signed every anti-abortion bill that reached his desk. But in other areas including his support for same-sex civil unions Huntsman has been more moderate...

Huntsman, who was introduced by Reed as a good conservative and a great friend, got a polite but not exuberant reception from the group, which earlier had greeted Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) with loud applause.
Bachmann got a standing ovation when she promised to overturn the health-care law that represents the signature achievement of Obamas presidency...

So. Conservative Christians in 2010 were 1/3rd of the actual voters! (Not just 1/3rd of the GOP base -- but of the entire voting populace!) And over 1/3rd of them have said they'd be "less likely" to vote for a guy who thinks he's on his way to godhood.
The honest question is "Can a documented, lifelong RINO win over the conservative base?"
And the honest answer is "no."
Exactly right, and well said.
No mention of the Mormon gods...no mention of the Christian God...no mention of his faith. Mum was the word about 'Mormon.' That is telling.
He's going to try to avoid it throughout the campaign. That's how much of a detriment that is. That's how much of an anchor it is. And that's how much he's ashamed of his Mormonism.
And here a lot of Mormons were getting on Huntsman's case for his straight-arming Mormon orthodoxy?
My answer would be: Possibly. Just don’t try to convince some of us that you are actually a Christian, despite the name you have chosen for your cult.
The forum in this election will be what Obama has done to the country, and how to fix THE ISSUES facing the effort to restore America to a Constitutional Republic -— NOT RELIGION.
Religion is not really an issue with the Presidency anyway. Did not the country prove that with Obama???
The ISSUES are what the socialist radical DemoRats cannot fight or argue -— the successful Repub candidate will take Obama down on the ISSUES, including Americanism, debt, foreign policy, taxation, spending, borrowing, etc, etc, etc. And let us not forget the Marxist takeover timebomb — OBAMACARE!
A conservative Mormon, probably. A moderate Mormon, maybe. A moderately socialist Mormon, unlikely. Mitt, not a chance.
A: Maybe. Dumb MSM-driven lame question either way.
Can an unrepentant abortionist/statist lying political whore RINO Romney presidential candidate win over the Republicans evangelical base?
A: HELL NO.
You nailed it. Huntsman’s Mormonism is the least of my problems with him.
Since Romney flip flops so much what would be so hard for him to become a southern baptist? That might put him over the top. The conversion would be a week’s worth of headlines. Where are his advisers? :-)
Well said! Also said well by this young lady:

This is just an MSM setup so they can call Republicans anti-Mormon or anti-anythingbutChristian.
I know a heck of a lot of Mormons, none support gays shacking up and trying to usurp the title of marriage, none support abortion, none support federal dictates on health care, none support illegal alien invasions...
Drive by MSM attempt to shame us into voting for a liberal by making it a religious discrimination case, rather than simply the case of utter liberals trying to crawl in on the Republican ticket.
Can a Mormon presidential candidate win over the Christian Conservatives ???
Well theyre neither Christian nor Conservative if he can
No, he can’t.
Religion matters. The president is a role model. And a person’s religious beliefs is an insight into their values and their reasoning ability.
Besides, in addition to following a false religion, Romney is a liberal.
You said it!!!
Well said! Did the public give a hoot that Obama was a muslim? NO, they didn’t, and they still don’t! He’s their go-to commie and that’s all they care about!
Take a hike Ralph Reed. You and your College Republicans such as Norquist and Rove are nothing to me anymore.
Obama was able to fool them he’s a member of the Church of Christ, for pete’s sake, and he’s a muslim. They bought it or didn’t give a flip as they voted for the magic...person.
