McDonald’s sandwich gets its 15 minutes of fame [The McLobster debuts for Lent]

What’s served in Halifax with plenty of mayonnaise and is as popular as the iPad 2?

(Popular for a few hours this past Wednesday, that is.)

Canadian Twitter users were somewhat perplexed to see the McLobster — sold at McDonald’s restaurants in the Maritimes and New England — mysteriously become a hot topic on the internet.

Some U.S. tweeters, thinking it was a new product, wanted to know when it would “launch.” (McDonald’s is famous for tailoring its menu to regional tastes. The Filet-O-Fish was introduced to appeal to Cincinnati-area Roman Catholic diners who abstained from meat on Fridays and Lent.)

One blog declared the sandwich to be fake. Well, it is indeed real — the ultimate mash-up between high and low cuisine (one Twitter user, @WatchJ, dubbed it the “rich people’s McRib”).

A call to a Halifax McDonald’s confirmed the treat is no hoax.

“It’s kind of like a tuna sandwich but with lobster in it,” as well as lettuce, explained a slightly confused employee, “on kind of like a hot dog bun.” It is sold in the summer for around $6.

Long John Silvers has had their lobster bites around for quite some time, and for fast food, they're not too bad!

That does not surprise me. It seems like every wide spot in the road has a Subway in rural Michigan.

Been doing this for years, as I follow Lent’s Friday rule of not eating meat. The Filet O fish is the cheapest food you could buy for close to a buck. The Subway version believe it or not, for seafood tastes like rubber.

“Looks pretty decent.”

It certainly does.

But it can’t be good, it just can’t be.

After all it is “fast food”, and to the food snobs (even here on FR), that means it simply cannot taste good, and/or will kill you just by looking at it.

Lettuce on a lobster roll?

I get lettuce and tomato on my shrimp and oyster burgers all the time. Yum.

Oh, I feel so sorry for myself. I’ve never even seen shrimp and oyster burgers and there you are, getting to eat them all the time! Count your blessings. (maybe after wiping off your fingers.)

Best sandwich in the area is the fresh snapper filet burger. You can get it blackened or fried. I'm getting hungry!

I think the capital requirements are quite low compared to a fast food place that grills / frys.

[The McLobster debuts for Lent]

Where does it say it's debuting for Lent? The article says, and you quoted, that "it is sold in the summer."

Every year when my folks went to New England, my mom would eat lobster 3 times a day. I don't know what she had for breakfast (maybe a lobster omelette) but I know she would eat McDonalds lobster sandwiches for lunch, and then a whole lobster for dinner.

Can you tell she loved lobster?

Those guys on Discovery Channel are out risking their lives off the Grand Banks so McDonald’s can put chunks of lobster mixed with “special sauce” and lettuce on a hot dog roll? Gotta be imitation lobster...
