Why do Christians worship on Sunday?

Have you ever wondered why one of the Ten Commandments seems null and void notably the one calling on believers to observe the Sabbath?
Ask your pastor or priest and you will probably hear it's because Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday... (or because the disciples broke bread on Sunday morning--after a daylong sermon that extended into the night hours the preceding Sabbath Day)
And then there's the little problem of this switch of worship days not being mentioned in the Bible and the historical fact that most Christians continued observing the Sabbath for hundreds of years after Jesus rose from the dead.
So what happened? What caused the switch?

I was born in Wyoming. I could fit rather nicely into Montana.Hah! No doubt you could... MT,WY,ID... There isn't a whit of difference...
You are right smack in the middle of some of the most beautiful landscape God has made; and, he has made some spectacular places!
And don't I know it. That's why I doubted anything would pull me off these mountains...
I will retire in the near future, so it is not so far fetched to imagine you and I eating apple pie and getting into a good old fashioned German knock-down and drag out friendly discussion.
Well, I am not German, but I am Dutch, so there is little fear of me cutting bait in such a thing... As to the rest, now that I know you are a mountain boy (or at the least a high plainsman), a week in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, or up the Yaak River... Now there's a conversation!
But be that as it may, the welcome mat is out, even if we are just two old dogs sitting on the porch. :D

7. Christian freedom allows worship of God on any day of the week a church pleases...Sunday is a good one because it is the resurrection day. U-2012>#7 That is lawlessness !
Not at all. Those who are being led by the Spirit do not carry out the desire of the flesh, but instead bear the fruit of the Spirit, against which, there is no law.
Where can I find that in scripture ? Please review:
Matt. 7:23; 13:41; 23:28; 24:12; Rom. 6:19; 2 Co. 6:14; 2 Thess. 2:3, 7; Heb. 1:9; 1 Jn. 3:4

h-d-l>you are honoring the day selected by the Roman Catholic Church You are using a Bible selected and preserved by the Roman Catholic Church. Three councils of bishops and a Papal decree between AD 380 and AD 410 promulgated the NT canon in the West. That's historical fact.
Are you rejecting YHvH and his Ru'ach HaKodesh preserving His Holy Word for His "called out ones" ?

So it doesn't count? What about churches that hold several services during the week so people with erratic work schedules can still gather to worship? Do their services not count? Hum? How about you show me where Jesus says if you don't worship on Saturday in a building of brick and mortar it's not valid.

Yeah, I reckon. I just love tweaking people like that though. Jesus came to get us away from that and here are these people wanting to bring it back.

Where can I find that in scripture ? What the messianics sometimes fail to understand is that old covenant gave way to new. The rabbis went in one direction while Jesus and His apostles when in another. The old covenant Sabbath was temporary, and looked on as an accommodation within the new Christian community until the transition from old covenant to new was completed. This happened around AD70 with the destruction of the temple. We see a gradual transition in the NT, esp., in Acts as more and more gentiles are added to the faith.
The only Christians who continued to insist on a seventh-day religious sabbath were the heretics like the Ebionites. Today we have a new breed of Ebionite. Trying to follow shadowy, ersatz old covenant forms, some not sure of the trinity, trying to place gentiles under the (expired) law of Moses.

Dear fellow FReeper - No one said gathering for worship “doesn’t count”. If you can make church attendance during the week, besides just on weekends... more power to you and that is a blessing few of us have due to long work hours to keep afloat... However, that is the point of the Sabbath is to give you a time out from work to dedicate wholly to God first and foremost and family.
It is Jesus that saves, not keeping the Sabbath. However, there is something that is missed in worship when you ignore the day God himself appointed at Creation and reiterated at Sinai and that ultimately God’s people will keep in the New Heaven’s and the New Earth, according to Isaiah 66:22-23

Good job.
You give me credit and accolades for what I said then tell me it is not as valuable as “worshiping on the Sabbath”. I am telling you that when ever you gather with believers to worship standing in the presence of God Almighty whether it is Saturday, Thursday or St Swithen’s Day that worship is and can be dedicated wholly to God. God does not care what day it is, that was the law Jesus freed us from the law and gave us Grace.
Jesus called out legalism, He really did not like it and He made that clear.

Do you mean YHvH's New Covenant as in Jeremiah 31:31-37 ? Are we there yet ?

If you love Jesus, then you follow His Commandments (John 14:15), why do you continue to pursue the pretentious notion that the 4th Commandment is any less important than, the 1st, 6th, 7th or 8th???
You basically extrapolate the longest Commandment at the heart center of God's Immutable Law... If the Law could be changed, then Jesus didn't need to die... His death on the cross vindicates the veracity of God's Law... But the teachings of men contradict this.
How do you interpret the following passage and continue to negate God's 4th Commandment?
17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:17-20
Can you tell me why God would write the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) with His own finger on stone if He intended to change it down the road.
I prefer to be condemned, as Sunday-keeping Christians propose based on my Sabbath observance, for what God wrote with His own finger, than what popular Christianity proports to be Bible Truth, while being purely based on traditions and speculations on men, hostile to God's Law.
The verses don't add up to justify man's imposed change of the Sabbath for a counterfit day of worship, used by paganism as the zenith day of worship in honor of some sun god.
Quite candidly, I'd rather be called a legalist, than a usurper... Only God can change His Law, but He won't, because God doesn't change:
Mal 3:6 KJV - For I [am] the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

>> “1 Cor 16:2 shows that the early Christians were meeting on Sunday.” <<

Actually, it does the opposite!
It proves that the first day of the week was a work day, where it was acceptable to gather up one’s goods for offering. That could not be done on a day of worship and rest.
To: taxcontrol
>> “The 7th day of rest according to Genisis has been lost in antiquity. No one can show exactly when the sabbath is or was and that it has been continued from Adam to present day” <<
.
That is an absurd assertion.
What event could possibly cause the entire world to lose count of the days of the week? Think about it.
