Catholic School's 'Unconscionable' Celebration [Catholic Caucus]

Boston College, a Catholic school, is stirring fresh controversy for honoring a notorious priest and former member of Congress.

Former Congressman Robert Drinan (D-Massachusetts), a late Jesuit priest and abortion rights advocate, will be honored March 7 as the Catholic school draws attention to his work and life, despite the heavy criticism he has received from the Catholic Church for his stance on abortion.

Michael Hichborn (American Life League)"It's bad enough that a pro-abortion priest that defied church law forbidding priests from holding public office should be celebrated at a Catholic college," laments Michael Hichborn, director of the American Life League's Defend the Faith project. "But to then celebrate this dissident priest by hosting Father (Raymond) Schroth and Congressman Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts), both of whom are stridently pro-abortion, is just unconscionable."

The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) has issued a letter to the college president, requesting that the school cancel the event and introduce policies to ensure the teachings of the Catholic Church. Hichborn hopes the church hierarchy will follow suit and take action.

Drinan lived the life of a reprobate.

It is my hope that he repented and my prayer that he experience final beatitude.

There is no active Knights of Columbus council at The Heights.

I’m not surprised. Notre Dame invited and celebrated Obozo who believes in infanticide AND abortion. So, I’m not surprised. Maybe they’ll let the ba$tard give out communion while he’s there.

Why the inviter isn’t fired and this “priest” is not excommunicated is beyond me.

The Jesuits were the Church’s response to the Reformation.

I believe the Church now needs a Reformation of the Jesuits.

Former Jesuit priest being a pro-abortion Senator?

Isn’t that like a Jewish Nazi?

Drinan is one of the most evil people who ever lived: given the fact that he was very intelligent, and received a thorough education concerning the difference between good and evil - and then consciously and consistently chose to do evil rather than good.

You know, we tried to warn you about them (the Jesuits).

But to be honest, I do wonder just what in the blazes happened to them.

They reactivate 5278 on May 13, 2008, not sure how it stands now. Problem with College Councils in turn over.

Maybe the Harvard Knights will protest.

I think that they were always aware of their first great task, and the fact that they failed, even with their excesses.

Received from an authoritative source:
I challenge the accuracy of these statements on a number of levels. Congressman Drinan acceded to Pope John Paul’s request that he step down from Congress in 1980.
I am certain that Fr. Drinan wasn’t, and Fr. Schroth isn’t pro-abortion.
Inaccurate Inflammatory invective diminishes the credibility of the blogger’s case.

Great song. Didn’t his lead guitarist die in a tragic plane crash, or am I thinking of someone else?

Let us go to http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/29/AR2007012902015.html :

If you've ever wondered whether God laughs, think back to 1980, when the Rev. Robert Drinan was ordered by Pope John Paul II to get out of politics and leave Congress. The Jesuit priest, who died on Sunday, was finishing his fifth term representing a suburban Boston district that included Cambridge and Brookline. The pope had been hearing from rankled conservative American Catholics--the Pat Buchanan, William F. Buckley Jr., William Bennett wing of the church -- that Father Drinan, a purebred Democrat, was a dangerous liberal. His voting record on abortion was seen as too pro-choice.

And on it cackles.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0107/2502.html

includes such gems as:

While the priest chose to live simply at Jesuit-run Georgetown University during his five terms as a congressman, there was nothing modest about his strongly held liberal views on a host of controversial issues. Most prominently, he parted company with mainstream Vatican policy with his pro-choice stand on abortion rights and birth control...

His support of abortion rights, in conflict with Roman Catholic policy, drew strong opposition from the Vatican and other top church leaders throughout his decade-long political career. For a time, he sought to reconcile his pro-choice position with official Church doctrine. He stated that while he viewed abortion as "virtual infanticide," he nevertheless held that its legality and morality were separate issues...

He continued to be a vocal supporter of abortion rights, much to the chagrin of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, speaking out, for example, in support of President Bill Clinton's veto of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act in 1996...

And numerous Catholic sites claim that he refused the request of his bishop 3 or 4 times to resign from Congress; it took a direct command from the Vatican before he finally did.
