An alarming trend is developing in the Free Republic Religion Forum in which a caucus identifier is being claimed for non-existent or impossibly defined groups. With the caucuses being self defined we see nonsense like the Sola Scriptura Caucus. Of course it doesnt mean all Scripture, only the thread initiators or Forum Moderators definition of Scripture. Jews who believe in the Scripture of the Old Testament are excluded. Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, and Jehovahs Witnesses are excluded even though they believe in the sufficiency of their own versions of Scripture. The not so transparent purpose of these faux caucuses is clearly to exclude a group of FReepers in a modern day repetition of Whites Only and Irish Need Not Apply prejudice. If this is allowed to stand what will we see next; caucuses so narrowly defined so as to only include ones bridge club or to exclude an individual FReeper? How about a caucus designation for everyone but citizens from New York? How about a mens only caucus? How about a caucus for those of us who drive BMWs? And what is being discussed in these faux caucus threads? Critical doctrinal issues such as ruggedized aircraft, home schooling, and civil unrest in Egypt. Give me a break!
Not on FR! Maybe a few.
I knew immediately what movie it came from.
Such a classic.
My whole family loves that movie. When my kids first saw it they were in stitches at that scene.
Just couldn't leave something not involving your church alone.
BTW, how’s your family?
More Christian charity towards those who are lost? It's a weak sip of Christ if even a sip that drives people to a desire to create enemies and drive others away from Christ to fulfill their own need to feel as though they're a good and put upon witness for Him.
Somehow the entire idea of witnessing seems to have gone out the window for many people who immediately respond to any question with snark or an assault on the questioner. I suppose some people think no question is ever an honest seeking for an answer because they are never honestly seeking to answer a question but rather seeking to show their own knowledge or prove their own righteousness.
have a nice day
I’m well under 40 and that reference went so far over my head, it waived hello to the International Space Station.
You were one of many who, a few years ago, invaded and overran a thread which was originally a Catholic Caucus thread. After a few hundred posts and appeals to the RM the Caucus designation was removed.
Catholics MAY have done that before, but that was the day I learned that if one side ignores the Caucus designation and swarms, they can cause the designation to be removed.
Some things I learn quickly and do not forget.
And one might ask what is wrong with a "White" caucus when we have a "Black" caucus. Of course, that is the conservative coming out in me.
Now all that being said, I guess I'm violating this caucus as I'm not whining. Or perhaps I just did. ;O)
The Latin definitely makes it more binding.
Thank you for contributing to the whiners caucus.
We’re planning to take a vacation in DC in early April. The kids are 10 and 14 so we’re going by train and staying a week. Shhhh ... we haven’t told them yet.
LOL! I’m 42, but I’ve always liked older movies.
This statement appeared in the article:
“Jews who believe in the Scripture of the Old Testament are excluded. Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, and Jehovahs Witnesses are excluded even though they believe in the sufficiency of their own versions of Scripture”
Is there a list of who is excluded or just a matter of judgement? I’ve never seen any list.
Preach it BROTHER!
I see a lot of arguing on a lot of caucus threads, but there is also one observation I want to make from personal experience.
There have been a few times when I had a question about something on a caucus thread for a caucus to which I do not belong. Though posting by non-members is technically not permitted, I chose to ask my question(s) anyway. Every time I have done so I have been met with nothing but respectful and helpful answers.
So for all the bad there may be, there is also good. And with that in mind, I think the best response is for people who get very angry at what one group believes or says to simply bypass such threads and move on. You aren’t helping anyone by getting worked up over it.
Heck, even Quix and I have had some interesting and civil discussions, and I think that we’re fairly close to polar opposites in our views on some topics. At the same time, I frequently disagree with people in the Catholic Caucus, a group which has otherwise shown me nothing but a warm welcome.
I’m usually an opinionated jerk. I can get offensive when I don’t choose my words carefully. I have a short temper and get worked up easily. If *I* can handle this stuff, I think it’s within the ability of anyone else to do so as well.
It did not involve any specific church at all. That was my point. It discussed the increased hostility faced by Christian homeschoolers. If it had said Baptist or Reformed or Evangelical homeschooling parents I would not have asked why it was a caucus.
The RM is free to decide that mention of a homeschool magazine that has SS (please don’t be offened by the abbreviation I mean no disrespect.) is enough to put back the caucus designation I’m fine with that.
I did not ask about the status in order to give you any difficulty about your beliefs but only because I think it is an important topic that many faithful Christians agree on.
What, if any, exactly is the deal on the “Catholic/Orthodox” designation, please? It seemed some were saying it was overruled or something.
This place is run like the Vatican — which is fine, as long as somebody comes along and makes order and sense of the ‘motu proprio”s and ‘sua sponte’s and indults and rescripts and so forth.
Regards
and when they can't !!!!CONTROL!!!! everyone and everything else, they want to pull the house down around everyone's ears. What magnanimous Christian Love.
BTW, having religious stuff flood the news political discussions is just NOT workable. This system works best--IN SPITE OF it NOT being under the Pope's !!!!CONTROL!!!!
Actually, it works best BECAUSE the Pope only has minimal !!!!CONTROL!!!! over the Rel Forum. And that only because of so many DOZENS of dedicated ABUSE BUTTON SITTERS in the ranks of the RC's.
