Caused by the fire, which is what the waving portion of the “horseman” is a reflection of.

Good grief - it’s an artifact caused by internal flare within the camera lens or anti-glare surface coating on the objective surface . Notice how the shape of the mysterious specter of doom is exactly the same as the brightest area of the flames and as the camera pans the artifact movement is exactly the same as the camera, right down to the bit of hesitation when the photographer begins the pan. You didn’t need to talk to a retired pastor, you needed to talk to a photographer. Mystery solved...

It maintains is relative position in the camera field of view as the camera as it moves indicating it is indeed something originating within the optics of the camera.

An alternative would be the camera is following the horse, but then why not center the camera on the horse? If they are able to maintain the absolute relative position, it wouldn’t have been an issue to center the field of view.

I always thought the horseman would be bigger. He looks like he is in Crusader garb with a banner and he is hooded. Not a reflection, IMO, but maybe tampered film. No matter, still keep the Lamps burning...

I’m thinking that the three previous have not happened yet so the fourth would be out of sync. There’s the white, black, red, then the fourth which has no color but it’s noted as pale. The 1st. is conquest, the 2nd. is war, the 3d. is famine, and the 4th. is death. These are the riders of the horses.
