Catholic Word of the Day: DIVERSITY OF GRACE, 01-27-11
CatholicReference.net ^ | 01-27-11 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

DIVERSITY OF GRACE

Difference in degree and variety of the grace of justification among persons in God's friendship. As expressed by the Council of Trent, the measure of sanctifying grace varies in the individual person who is justified according to the measure of God's free distribution and the disposition or co-operation of the recipient (Denzinger 1529). Moreover, sanctifying grace is increased by good works. The various good works, done freely by co-operating with God's will, are rewarded by different grades of grace.

I am confused. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing (works); it is the gift of God."

According to diversity of grace...there are varying degrees of salvation? Is there sorta, kinda salvation and really, mucho grande salvation? I'm just trying to get a grip on the concept.

Trying to justify salvation by works by tying it somehow to levels of grace doesn’t work any way you look at it. They know that salvation by works is unBiblical but need to work it in somehow to retain control of the people. It’s a lie from Satan IMO.

“[21] Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar? [22] Seest thou, that faith did co-operate with his works; and by works faith was made perfect? [23] And the scripture was fulfilled, saying: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to justice, and he was called the friend of God. [24] Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only? [25] And in like manner also Rahab the harlot, was not she justified by works, receiving the messengers, and sending them out another way?

[26] For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead. “

“Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” John 6:28-29

There is a lot more to grace than we as humans can even fathom.

Note the word "supernatural"

SANCTIFYING GRACE

The supernatural state of being infused by God, which permanently inheres in the soul. It is a vital principle of the supernatural life, as the rational soul is the vital principle of a human being's natural life. It is not a substance but a real quality that becomes part of the soul substance. Although commonly associated with the possession of the virtue of charity, sanctifuing grace is yet distinct from this virtue. Charity, rather, belongs to the will, whereas sanctifying grace belongs to the whole soul, mind, will, and affections. It is called sanctifying grace because it makes holy those who possess the gift by giving them a participation in the divine life. It is zo_ (life), which Christ taught that he has in common with the Father and which those who are in the state of grace share.

Thank you for the reply, but I inquired about your original post, which did not mention "Supernatural". I based my question on the relationship between grace and salvation (your callsign) as well as the link between grace and works, therefore the link between salvation and works. So far, one person provided scripture referring to works albeit Old Testament which falls under the "old covenant"(thanks for that). Now that you provided the definition of sanctifying grace...which states in the first sentence which permanently inheres in the soul. So again, what it the link between Sanctifying Grace and Works? If it is permanent and a person's works cease.....what then?
