Did Martin Luther Act Infallibly in Defining What Books Belong in the Bible?

Did Martin Luther Act Infallibly in Defining What Books Belong in the Bible?

If Luther did not act infallibly:

- How can Protestants be certain that they have an infallible collection of Books in Holy Scripture?
- How can the Bible be the sole rule of faith, if no one knows with certainty which books belong in the Bible?

If Luther acted infallibly:

- How do you know?

Saul was told differently in Acts 22:16.
mind telling me where the Bible says Baptism is a profession of faith after salvation?
the Nicene Creed “we believe in one Baptism, for the forgiveness of sins”. this has been the Church’s teaching for 2,000 years.

My point is that worship of the catholic ‘church’ is fundamentally incoherent, and evil beyond all comprehension.

No man can or ever has acted ‘infallibly,’ but the Holy Spirit, who guides us to the word of God, does constantly.

“hiding them? LOL! attend Mass and you will hear practically the entire Bible read in a three year period”

You are familiar with one of the big problems the Catholic Church had with Martin Luther, right? The fact that he translated the Bible. So that others besides Catholic Priests who until then would not allow anyone else to read the Bible.

“you do agree the Church was given the authority to teach”

Jesus gave everyone the ‘authority’ to learn. In fact I can sit down and speak directly to Jesus without being forced through a priest.

“scripture is not supposed to be privately interpreted against doctrines taught by the Church?”

Only according to man made Catholic doctrine. I’m sure if I was going to write doctrine to give myself more power I’d try to circumvent the rules as well.

"So you are saying that Christ did not form the Catholic Church? / Hope you get your answer at the moment of your particular judgment. / Are you saying that the Apostles were not chosen by Christ? That they were not the first Bishops of the Church, given authority through Christ breathing on them and saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you shall forogive, they are forgiven them, whose sins you shall bind, they are bound.”

Apostles are not Bishops.

And in John we read, " 19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld."

no, these are examples of other groups who don’t believe in the “One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”

No, these are examples of syncretism. In order to be Vodoun, one must first be a Catholic, I know this for a fact. Look it up, you have a search engine at your disposal, have at it. Same of Santeria and Candoble.

You want to ignore all the heretical sects that have spun off of the Church throughout history up to the Reformation, in order to pretend that Protestants are somehow solely responsible for it now? Then own up to allowing syncretism in the Carribean, Central and South America.

That sword cuts both ways.

the Holy Spirit does not lead anyone to hold doctrines that the Church did not teach or believe for 1,500 years. no one “worships” the Catholic Church, we worship Jesus and He is found in His Body, the Church.

>> “Seems to me that we’ve been infected by a few folks who seek divisions among Christians.” <<

.
Jesus Christ, the only man that has the power to even know who is his own said the following:

Matthew 10:

[34] Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
[35] For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
[36] And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

Division is required for purity, and it is the Lord himself that seeks to divide. (light from darkness, truth from the lie)

Jesus said, “Go then, to all the people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

Other examples of people being baptized after accepting Jesus - Acts 2:41, Acts 8:35-38, Acts 16:29-33 Can you show me where the Nicene Creed is in the Bible?

Jesus divides the saved from the unsaved. He prayed the Church be One in John 17 and Paul admonished the Church to be One in 1 Corinthians 1, and we are!!

“so you accept Jerome as a Christian, even though he taught baptismal regeneration, the Real Presence in the Eucharist, the sacrifice of the mass, apostolic succession, infant baptism, the papacy, prayers for the dead????”

I accept many Catholics as Christians, since we are not saved by perfect theology, but by faith in Jesus. I doubt Jerome accepted papal supremacy, real presence meant different things to different users of the phrase, and didn’t always mean transubstantiation - a word that didn’t exist when Jerome was alive.

I have prayed for dead people, trusting that the God who knows the future before it happens will hear my prayer that someone might have repented before their death. I don’t know my father’s state when he died, so I don’t mind praying that God might have moved his heart prior to his death.

The sacrifice of the mass originally was a sacrifice of thanksgiving, which is where the word Eucharist comes from. I have no problem celebrating the Eucharist, but it is NOT a perpetual sacrifice of Jesus Christ - as clearly taught in Hebrews. We do it “in remembrance”, not as an actual sacrifice, and I’m not sure when that error entered Catholic theology.

I do not accept baptismal regeneration, but I’m not saved by denying it.

just as i thought, no where does the Bible say Baptism is a profession of faith. My Bible says Baptism is how your sins are washed away and you receive the Holy Spirit. Peter says it saves you! Of course, if an adult is coming to Christ, they first must profess faith in Christ.
the Nicene Creed is evidence of what the Church has taught for 2,000 years, your belief is a 16th century invention.

>> “you DO accept this, right?” <<

.
The Lord’s own do not accept any creed.

Creeds are the errors and deceptions of men. They mix a little truth with an ugly lie every time.

The Nicean creed contains the obvious lie: “We confess (I confess) one baptism for the remission of sins.”

Baptism does not give remission of sin. Baptism is an obedient affirmation of the saving blood of Christ by the believer. One must already be saved, or the ‘baptism’ is without meaning.

Oh but they are. You’re not familiar with the southeastern and Gulf coasts of the United States, let alone the Carribean. I am. They’re Catholic, baptised and attending Mass. The Catholic Saints are syncretised with old African animist gods and they are invoked, their statues are worshipped and offerings are made to them. Talk to any unbiased observer who has ever been to Haiti for instance, for mission work or any other reason. They are tolerated with a wink and a nod by the church. It’s how they were initially proselytized, allowing them their old beliefs in combination. It’s an error that has been present to some extent with the Church of Rome from the earliest times.

“hiding them? LOL! attend Mass and you will hear practically the entire Bible read in a three year period. “

Nope. And particularly not prior to Vatican 2 (17% of the NT, 1% of the OT):

That is falsehood on both counts. God’s word says no such thing, nor does Peter preach that lie.

.
>> “The Nicene Creed is evidence of what the Church has taught for 2,000 years” <<

.
The Church teaches nothing but to read the word of God. The “catholic church” is not even a part of the Church; it is an invention of evil men that denies the word of God and replaces it with vile creeds.

I would say that is a bit of a gloss, as the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Syriac, and Coptic churches are not all in communion with each other. They are in schism due to doctrinal differences, not unlike the schism between the Protestants and Roman Catholic churches. Though I think they are are a part of the Church.

read Jerome and you will see he believed all those. if baptismal regeneration was good enough for Saul ( Paul ) in Acts 22:16, it is good enough for me.
