Featured Term (selected at random):

AGGIORNAMENTO

Updating. The term entered common Catholic usage under Pope John XXIII and it has two quite distinct meanings. It means internal spiritual renewal, and external adaptation of the Church's laws and institutions to the times.

All items in this dictionary are from Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary, © Eternal Life. Used with permission.

TOPICS: Apologetics; Catholic; History; Theology
KEYWORDS: catholic; catholiclist
I expected this word to mean some kind of ornamentation. LOL!

external adaptation of the Church's laws and institutions to the times.

I'm not a Catholic, so maybe I shouldn't comment here (if so: sorry).

It seems to me that most Christian churches have done this, and IMO it is a serious mistake. You can't move away from scripture and start behaving in ways that will make you "popular" with a trendy secular society. Just to pick one issue: homosexuality is a sin. Full stop. Deciding to adapt and make peace with homosexuals, and tolerate their sin, is a huge mistake.

Again, my comment is not specifically addressing the Catholic Church. I have been associated with a number of Protestant churches who thought active homosexuals made perfectly fine Christians. They don't.

"Aggiorniamento" in the second sense is a dirty word.

You're right, CCg, it led to a lot of uproar and error in the church. Fortunately BXVI is pushing back (and the usual suspects are whining).

Dunno if an active homosexual could possibly be a good Christian, but I'm as sure as I can be that they make lousy priests, bishops, and directors of seminaries. We've seen all too ample proof of THAT. BXVI however is cleaning house, and high time.

I wondered about that secon definition too. It just didn’t seem to fit with the updating and renewal line.
