Last Saturday's shooting tragedy at a Tucson, Ariz., supermarket is stunning in its randomness. ... Whenever these awful tragedies: Columbine, September 11, Virginia Tech and others, happen, there comes the theodicy question. Why did God allow this evil to happen to innocent people? Why did perfectly innocent bystanders at a Tucson supermarket on a Saturday morning find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time?

He is, however, most interested in how we as human beings react and how we treat each other in the wake of such tragedy.
To give people an opportunity to show their character.
The Holocaust if they want to blame God for letting that happen. We could start there.
Has blaming everyone and nearly everything but the shooter, failed for the media thus, now it is time to blame God? I disdain completely these types of pieces by someone wanting to be called a writer of truth. I cannot do nothing but shake my head (left and right) in amazement.
Um... yes it was, and yes He did. The Fall changed all that, of course.
Why does God allow idiots to get jobs writing op-ed pieces?
And I have no problem placing the blame squarely on the shooter and those who enabled him.
Death? It happens to everyone, only difference is timing.
And one's persepctive - to the godless narcissist, nothing could be worse than The End.
We as a nation have told God to “get lost” for decades. He is giving us what we asked for. Now we begin to see the consequences.
I believe in a few basic truths that help me through such otherwise tragic and unexplainable events:
1. The world was perfect (no sickness, no death, no weeds, no birth pain, etc.) when God created it (Genesis).
2. The world has been decaying (sickness, death, tragedy, calamity, etc.) because of and since the fall (Romans 5).
3. God does not cause tragedy, but He is the only One who can bring good out of it (Romans 8:28).

We're in weird times. Economy is supposedly growing, but who among us is feeling it? Even those who are supposedly religious, tend to tolerate moral lapses that shouldn't be tolerated. Gay marriage, abortion, Muslims, atheism... are we surprised that things fall apart?
Its a battlefield and the battle isn’t over.
A thorough reading of The Book of Job would answer any and all questions regarding evil in the world and man’s response. Mankind is on this insane trip that by doing the same thing over and over, that different results will somehow occur.
On an intelligence scale, man’s perception may be triple digits; but in real actions, a slug is smarter.
Don't say that in front of today's liberal -- they believe life is 'perfectable'.
From birth none of us are “innocent”
....perhaps our lib author should go to church and ask Him herself, instead of trying to raise concerns about people’s faith.....but then again, she made be afraid of the answer she gets there.
In any case, teach a guy that there is no God, strip away any and all moral education, teach him not to value innocent life, feed him a diet of pot and TV and Hollywood schlock, and the miracle is that there aren’t more out there just like him.
You're right...
