Posted on 12/28/2010 1:06:47 PM PST by Colofornian

The Holy Bible testifies of Jesus Christ and has influenced and sustained millions of His followers. It is a collection of sacred writings containing God’s revelations and accounts of His dealings with His children.

Just fill out the form below and we will deliver a free copy of the Holy Bible (limit of one Bible per household). It’s a gift from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...

WARNING: By signing up to receive this free Bible, expect contact from Lds missionaries to follow!

Besides simply adding to the circulation of the Bible -- which is a good thing...please note that the movie, The Book of Eli, shows there are people who have desired circulation of the Bible for counter (as in counterfeit) purposes to its design!

The other reason for this post is that it's the perfect contrast to how Lds leaders have dissed the Bible for generations.

The Mormon church tells you they believe in the Bible "insofar as correctly translated" -- but then other than some "corrections" Joseph Smith made (he didn't know Greek or Hebrew) they don't tell you where it's "incorrectly translated."

The Book of Mormon contains 11 word-for-word chapters from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. Joseph Smith "translated" one of these chapters (Is. 51) so well into 2 Nephi 8 (supposedly from 559-545 B.C. era) is a word-for-word copy of Isaiah 51. What's wrong with that? Well Smith included even italic comments added to the KJV for clarification purposes -- the italic words were NOT in the original text!!!

[Hmm...what Bible did Joseph have in that hat as he was translating?]

Not only does the Lds church offer a free KJV Bible here online -- but for years it would offer TV & radio commercials offering ONLY a free King James version of the Bible.

It makes me wonder...as to why it would offer it -- if the Lds church believes it's so defective. I mean, if you ran a company that offered a deficient product that was "insufficient" for what it was billed to be, would you continue to spend millions of $ on commercials and free giveaways of that product -- even when in MANY, MANY other communications/other venues, you were tearing down the trustworthiness of that product?

Wouldn't that be to speak with a snake-like forked tongue? Wouldn't that appear that you're trying to come across as "Christian" to a specific audience -- all the while tearing it down in other venues (particularly, Mormon venues)?

I used to irk my Mormon friends’ parents by giving them a New International Version of the Bible for birthdays and etc. See, the Mormon love of the KJV is found in the fact that it is so difficult to read that almost no one bothers. But an NIV is easy to read and understand and many of my one-time Mormon friends ended up leaving the church when their eyes were opened to the real Bible.

Here's a good example of changes Joseph Smith made to the KJV Bible in his "JST" version of the Bible -- which, BTW, the Mormon church doesn't even own the copyright to!!! (Joseph's widow, Emma, joined the RLDS church after his death and retained copyright status, which stayed with the RLDS church...the Mormons footnote it in their Bible...So something Joseph Smith said he was "commanded" to do by God is a mere footnote to the Mormon church!)

Please note, the bible supplied will be a King James Version, cross refernced to the Book of Mormon.

The LDS Church does not freely acknowledge the existence of, or use the Joseph Smith Translation of the bible, because FLDS/LDS "Prophet" Brigham Young claimed is was a fraud.

ALL: To clarify post #5 [some lines were left out]...these were some of the common 2010 threads -- many of where Mormons dissed the Bible.

So grassroots (Lds) FREEPERS have dissed the Bible...like their leaders...

It's duplicious of their leaders to turn around & offer a product they themselves have dissed.

Now it's true the Mormons aren't alone in this.

Many liberal mainline churches have done the same thing: They've run down the Bible & yet they turn around & give it away as if it's a great gift (which it is).

But c'mon...one face per person, please!

Every one who stays at a Marriott Hotel - which always includes a copy of the Book of Mormon - should take the
book and write inside the cover (using ink):

“WARNING: This book is cultic material and contradicts
the Holy Bible.”

I already have the most common Bible versions, so this is useless. How about a free Book of Mormon? It’s the only major religious text that I don’t have.

I've never read anything but the KJV. I love the beautiful and even poetic language. Proper names and places are difficult to pronounce sometimes but that would be the same in any version.

Now if all those Biblical characters had been named Bill, Joe, Sam etc. It would be easier.

(I'm not Mormon)

Two years ago at Christmas, my wife gave me a new KJV Bible, with large print. It had a tight band around it, so I got the scissors out..

I bet you already guessed what happened.....Yup, I scissored right through the Bible cover.

Seekers of truth,

If you peruse the Free Republic religion forums you will notice a pattern. There's an anti-Mormon group of people here that spends a great deal of their time attacking the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They post regurgitated propaganda on an almost daily basis.

They have a misguided obsession. You can witness many different tactics employed that you might find quite interesting. The straw man argument is a big favorite and is frequently preceded by cherry-picking quotes or other material. After the "quotation" the attacker will misrepresent what has been said or what was meant and then attack their own interpretation.Later they will have the audacity to claim they were "only" quoting our own material.

They will of course insist ad nauseum that they are merely using our sources and are therefore innocent of any deceptive practice. LDS persons have no issue whatsoever having our scriptures or leaders quoted as long as it is presented fairly and accurately. This is rarely (if ever) done.

Another favorite is posting scripture or statements which on their own really present no dilemma. They make something out of nothing while never bringing up a single objection that hasn't been addressed a hundred times before.

You might note a couple of other tactics used to try to antagonize is the use of disrespectful or insulting terms or language and/or pictures. That's a Christlike thing to do right? Yeah I don't think so either. It does speak volumes about them though.

Some of them claim being some sort of special witness to you as being supposedly former Mormons. So someone who is an ex-member of any organization would never have an axe to grind or have reason to try to justify their actions by any means? Perhaps not but perhaps so. The LDS Church gains members from other denominations as well as others faiths all the time. This doesn't make them an expert on anything and you certainly won't hear them attacking their forner Church.

Frequently they cruise the headlines of the day seeking any story that might be twisted into making the Church look bad. Anything will do, just watch the progression of posts following it and see what I mean.

After reading their posts, I invite you to seek the truth about whatever "issue" they seem to be "revealing" or "exposing". I promise that if you do so with honest intent, the "ahah" moments you will have will be many and frequent. You will start to recognize the tactics employed to cleverly twist and attack and will likely chuckle the more you see. In actuality, there's nothing new here. It's all been addressed many times before.

The latest twist in the anti-Mormon propaganda machine is to actually go to the links provided, but then they cherry pick what they want, then quote and straw man attack that. Clever. It almost appears that they are helping you, the seeker of truth out by doing some footwork for you. Not so much. Don't be insulted, look for yourself. It's not the haystack they want you to think.

Here's a few links to get your started from a different viewpoint. I have found that the vast majority of the "issues" brought up can be found and addressed at http://www.fairlds.org/ but here's more:

http://scriptures.lds.org/
http://www.lds.org
http://www.fairlds.org/
http://www.mormonapologetics.org/
http://www.mormonwiki.com/Main_Page
http://www.lightplanet.com/response/index.html
http://www.jefflindsay.com/LDS_Intro.shtml
http://www.answeringantimormons.com/index.htm
http://promormon.blogspot.com/

Now you will likely notice the "you never address or answer our points" posts pop up as usual. All after providing the answers just as you have here.

Sometimes it is claimed that these sites present a needle in a haystack. Far from it. But if you give up before you try you won't know will you? They often state that these sites provide no answer. They just don't want you looking. It is as simple as that.

Will you wear blinders too? Seek truth. Find out for yourself. Want to chat with someone on any topic? A few of these sites provide just that. So do your homework sincere seeker of truth. Listen and read from both "sides". Make up your own mind.

I witness to you of these truths and wish you the best, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The majority of the objections to the LDS have been substantiated over and over again. It is not a case of “cherry-picking” - it is a case that the LDS theology will not stand up to the Truth. There are none quite so blind as those who cannot, or will not, recognize the truth. The objections posted are too big to be dismissed. Granted, some have been less than tactful...but that is a rarity, not the rule.

It is true that you can purchase a bible from the Dollar Store for one dollar plus sales tax if applicable. However, you will receive a vastly superior quality bible from the LDS church.

You can also receive a free copy of the Constitution from Heritage.org that includes a copy of the Declaration of Independence. America's founding documents go hand in hand with the bible. It serves every American well to understand the importance of each in their lives.

There I fixed that for you. It’s accurate now.

Boy do I agree with you on that point! And they regurgitate anti-Mormon propaganda here almost daily! All after being supplied with the answers to their non-issues. It’s like they “cannot, or will not, recognize the truth” exactly as you said! Oh well... we can only keep trying, the rest is up to them.

If you look in the Mormon's KJV Bible, you are likely to see "Inspired Version" somewhere on the title page. This means they have done their own little bit of surgery. One of the Articles of Faith is something to the order of, "...We believe the Bible is the true word of God, as far as it is translated correctly..."
