Catholic Word of the Day: IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, 11-27-10

Featured Term (selected at random):

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Title of the Blessed Virgin as sinless from her first moment of existence. In the words of Pope Pius IX's solemn definition, made in 1854, "The most holy Virgin Mary was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." This means that since the first moment of her human existence the mother of Jesus was preserved from the common defect of estrangement from God, which humanity in general inherits through the sin of Adam. Her freedom from sin was an unmerited gift of God or special grace, and an exception to the law, or privilege, which no other created person has received.

Neither the Greek nor Latin Fathers explicitly taught the Immaculate Conception, but they professed it implicitly in two fundamental ways. Mary, they said, was most perfect in purity of morals and holiness of life. St. Ephrem (c. 306-73) addressed Christ and Mary with the words "You and Your mother are the only ones who are totally beautiful in every way. For in You, O Lord, there is no stain, and in Your mother no stain." Mary was described as the antithesis of Eve. Again in Ephrem, "Mary and Eve [were] two people without guilt. Later one became the cause of our death, the other cause of our life." While implicit in the early writers, the Immaculate Conception had to be clarified before becoming explicit dogma. Main credit for this goes to the Franciscan John Duns Scotus (c. 1264-1308), who introduced the idea of pre-redemption in order to reconcile Mary's freedom from original sin with her conception before the coming of Christ. (Etym. Latin im-, not + maculare, to stain.)

I’m looking for a revelation of the basis for this doctrine in the Holy Scriptures, but thus far to no avail.
But said scriptures do inform us that the divinity of Jesus, the Christ, the only begotten Son of God, emanates from and is embedded in his identity as a full participant in the Godhead, and in no wise is dependent on any attribute of any mortal being.

.
You didn’t look at all three sources on which the teachings of the Catholic Church is based: (1) Sacred Scripture, (2) Sacred Tradition, (3) Magisterium.

Try searching in (2) and (3).

Fine, whatever. Just don’t confuse the Immaculate Conception of Mary (conceived by natural means, but without original sin) with the Virgin Birth (conceived by divine means) of Jesus.

What is it about you Christians and sex?

'No stain' indeed. Just because a woman has sex, she becomes stained?

Madness

Well thanks. You could explain it, though, because that’s how it comes across to us unenlightened Pagans.

Did you read the original post, at all? It doesn’t say anything about sex. Maybe you’re obsessed.

Yes I did. I'm intrigued as to what the 'stain' is.

Much is made of Mary's virginity, so of course sex SEEMS to the point. If I'm wrong, then tell me so.

You are wrong.

The stain, originated in Adam and Eve, our first parents, is disobedience to God. In Christian belief, all descendants of Adam and Eve have a nature weakened by hereditary sin.

There is no suggestion that Mary was conceived by anything other than natural sexual relations between her parents, or that there is anything sinful in normal sexual relations between spouses.

The contention is the Mary was free from the hereditary effects of sin, in order to pass a sinless human nature to Jesus. Jesus was conceived miraculously, not through sexual intercourse, in order to be the Son of God rather than of a human father.

Disobedience starting with Adam and Eve.

Mary did NOT disobey God, but instead said “Yes” without which we would have no Christ.

Have you ever read the account of the angel Gabriel’ s annoucement to Mary (Annuciation) in Luke?

Pleased that I could help! If you don’t believe Jesus was different in any way from the common run of humanity, you probably wonder why we care about this other stuff. However, it is a cohesive set of beliefs.

As I said in #6, if you know that Immaculate Conception (of Mary) and Virgin Birth (of Jesus) aren’t the same thing, you’re way ahead of the general public.

Oh I’ve long known the Immaculate Conception was different to the birth of Jesus. But you’re right, not a lot of people know that ;-)

If I ever converted to Christianity, the Catholic Church would be where I belong, absolutely.

We welcome you with open arms.

Find a church close to you where you can sit down with the priest, get some questions andswered and enroll in a RCIA class.

Explanation of RCIA coming — it’s Catholic jargon. LOL!
