CLERESTORY

The upper part of a church wall having windows in it above the roofs of the aisles. Found in early Christian basilicas, it was beautifully developed later in Gothic cathedrals.

Quite honestly, I'm not sure; I just 'jacked the picture since it was one of the best illustrations of a clerestory that I could find. The image came from a custom stained glass business in the KC-MO area, so presumably, it's from a church in their service region.

I think it would be clearer to say it is the windows of the nave that are higher than the roof of the aisles.
