I always wondered if Jesus called them “Sons of Thunder” in a tongue in cheek joke about Zebedee: maybe HE was the one with the thunderous temper and his sons were like him. Perhaps the whole family was loud and brawny, including their mother!
Sons of Thunder — I always understood that this title went with their presumption about sitting at the right hand and left hand of Jesus in heaven.
In one Gospel, however, it is their mother, Mary, who does the asking.
