Somehow I got a duplicate thread on this post. I'm going to delete it. But here is the great picture that comment from Cronos:
Even in Torun, which is a city in the North-West of Poland, there are signs that indicate the direction to get to Santiago de Compostelo -- a seashell!
I couldn't find an exact picture, but these are little seashells on old (12th century) churches and I seriously suspect some of these little paintings are at least a few centuries old.
