Boy this guy would hate my church with the big screens, the lights, the multiple guitars, and drums.

As a teen I used to go to church regularly, latin mass, an air of mystery, deep tones, chants, etc. Then they went hippie. Banners with stupid slogans hanging on the walls, everything in english, long haired freaks playing guitars and banjos, a new church rebuilt to look like a pool hall. No stained glass, huge windows. The religious atmosphere was trashed. It was ridiculous. I had to be forced to go after that. Then they started the hand shaking, greeting stuff. Stopped going as soon as I could. Went back for a while, then the priest scandals hit and they did little or nothing. Not been back since.

Panic here because we are down to two VERY elderly priests celebrating the Tridentine and a withering parish because they are getting older also — just a couple young families. Panic gets worse when I get sick and my family can’t make the trip — I know the usher is counting attendance. Prayers welcomed by any reading this for continuation of our Latin Mass and training of more priests.

This "lets kiss and shake hands" serves no purpose and I do not participate.

One of the reasons I haven't been to Church in a long time, I not into the phony stuff, I'm not into the attention kissy huggy stuff. I'm not a people person. I'm also not interested into going to a church that says one thing in their doctrinal statement while they preach something else. I'm not into luke warm watered down sermons and teachings.

I'm not a Catholic, but outside of their theology I probably would like their old style services, minus the Latin stuff

Did you know that it was totally optional to even have this in the Mass? Some priests choose to omit it. Hooray!

And mine, with the Latino-fusion band, the average of four children under 10 per family, and the occasional shouts of “Amen!” (Or Ole’, or “Viva!” or “My teeeeeeth!” if my toddler gets too close to the microphone.)

But oh well. I don’t have to go to the service the author likes, and he doesn’t have to go to ours.

The whole idea of going to Mass was to pray, follow the Mass in Latin or English, say the rosary or whatever and receive the Holy Eucharist. Was it uncomfortable sometimes? you bet. Was it tough to get up on Sunday morning and head out into the cold temps and have to walk to church even? You bet.
Were we allowed to have water or breakfast prior to going if we were going to Communion? No way.
Did we feel great when we left church? Special? Yes!!!

Today they eat in church, unruly kids playing with toys and books. We told our kids it was God’s house and we behaved in His house the same way we behaved in our own home. We told them we had to be quiet and pray and be respectful. They were.

Today EVERYTHING has to be made so that we are all comfortable. God forbid should any of us have to kneel for 5 minutes or stand for 5 minutes or kids go ANYWHERE without toys or coloring books and crayons there for them. Now do I think those are cute at certain places? You bet. But for everywhere all the time? NO. How will kids ever learn that they can’t have everything in life and they won’t always win the trophy or they won’t always win the race etc if they are not taught on how to understand and accept when they lose or miss out on something.

I’m ranting... sorry.

That was a good rant. It’s hard for us under-forty types to even envision how it used to be. My mom tells me stories about how orderly her grade school was, and it sounds like a fantasy.

even our high school. We walked a racetrack pattern to get from one class to another even if your next class was directly across the door from your last class. People just don’t get it. Those kinds of things were done to promote self discipline and order. Rule of law...abiding by the rules that were set forth by the school. If every kid disagreed with the teachers and school rules...there would be chaos in the schools. Oh wait...I forgot...there is. :)

Seriously...we abided by the rules. We laughed at them sometimes and laughed as a kid got zonked by a nun (later of course) but it was FUN too. Plus when you can keep a running relationship with people over the years that taught you...it can’t be all bad.

Kids don’t know what happiness and joy there is in being in a group like that. There is belonging, pride in your uniform, pride in your school and lots of fun. Memories now that were made back then and times we wish young people could experience today. They might have more respect for themselves and everything else. To me it is sad. The kids are missing out on it all. We looked forward to goiong to school cause that’s whree all our friends wre. Why would we want to be home??? Oh well, maybe one day the world will go back to being sane once again.

Your mom is right...no fantasy...just right.

If I could have my druthers, I'd wish for

1. an option for a simple "Low Mass" dialogue liturgy, say on Saturday night, or very early Sunday morning.

2. I would wish people would S T O P with the handshaking, hand-raising, and all the other theatrical gestures that have oozed their way into the Mass in the last forty years. Shaking hands and talking AFTER THE CONSECRATION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST sould be forbidden. Greet each other before Mass begins, please.

Throw out the guitars and bring back sacred silence??

I guess you folks don’t like Psalms 150 either.

That said, I don’t care for gospel music being performed as though the members are trying out for ‘American Christian Music Idol’.

Liturgical Reforms wish-list

Interesting to me that Roman Catholic whining about liturgical novelty and failures-of-good-taste sounds so similar to what happens in Protestant circles.

Do you get the feeling the the purveyors of liturgical novelty just aren't listening?

2. Rhythms. Excessive use of syncopated rhythms produces a very secularised effect

It's an anglo thing. Luther's Ein Feste Burg was originally (so I'm told) syncopated. You can sometimes hear it done that way still -- trust me, it's better.

Plainchant.

See also D. G. Hart, Why should episcpolians have all the good chants.

And pray, pray that you never get a "praise band".
