Featured Term (selected at random):

CHRISTIAN NAMES

Names given to individuals at their baptism. The custom of giving the name of a saint when a person is baptized goes back to the earliest days of the Church. It is required by ecclesiastical law and means that the saint whose name is chosen becomes a special patron to protect and guide and be the heavenly intercessor for the one who bears his or her name.

people shouldn't be given names as infants. they should be allowed to grow up and choose thier own.

Mine is Joan of Arc. I had always loved her, even as a child. At the liberal parish where we came into the Catholic church, they discouraged us (strongly) from taking Saints’ names, but I did anyway.

The Dutch Reformed Congregation didn’t have any such custom in the 1960s (and probably doesn’t now, either ;-), so I didn’t get a saint’s name until I was confirmed as a Catholic in 1993: Helena.

We joined the Church in a liberal parish, too, but they still encouraged saints’ names for Confirmation. I recall that we had a couple of Agathas, a Mary Magdalene, Edward, Augustine, Veronica ...

Heh, I looked up St. Kenneth, too. One of those old Irish guys.

We paired our Old Testament names (Jesse, Daniel, Jonathan) with more recent ones (William, Edmund, Francis) just to be overzealous.

There are thousands, really. Do you get Saint of the Day? Lists and lists of names I recognize but did not know were saints: Ursula, St. John Capistrano (interesting for the So Cal folks), lots of local saints from here and there.
