Respect Life Sunday set for October 3
Catholic parishes in western Oregon will celebrate Respect Life Sunday on October 3. That Sunday will mark the beginning of a month long observance of promoting respect for life from conception to natural death. The theme for this year is “The measure of love is to love without measure.” Archbishop John G. Vlazny will mark the occasion with a Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday, October 3 at 11:00 am.
The Respect Life Program was adopted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1972. It promotes the Church’s teaching on the value and dignity of human life to the Catholic community and to the wider community. It combines education, prayer, service and advocacy. The topics addressed this year include:
• the death penalty and Divine Mercy
• end of life care
• infertility treatments in line with church teaching
• sexual trafficking
• population control
• depression and suicide among youth
• the promise of pro-life youth
At the request of Pope Benedict XVI, all bishops around the world will join with their parishioners in the Advent season to pray for respect of human life.
Archbishop Vlazny will celebrate Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral on December 5, 2010 at 11:00 am. The Mass will join with others around the globe to witness that we are a “people of life.”

In 2009, over 1450 cities and towns held Life Chains (in over 1700 locations), and each Chain is posted at LifeChain.net. There is no way anyone can tell me that isn't a person, a human being who deserves to live just like anybody else. The surgeon (after a successful operation) said nothing had ever had that kind of impact on him before.
The baby, he’s maybe twelve now, has Spina Bifida, the same thing my youngest has. I have to find the picture of this kid at 9, winning a medal at a swimming competition.

Meanwhile on the dark side, did you see the 10/10 commercial? They exposed themselves re: humanity. Will mail.
I have a problem with Respect Life Sunday. Respecting life shouldn’t be delegated to just one Sunday a year. It should be the utmost priority in our lives, and every day, not just one day should be highlighted as respecting life. The church I go to has a big to-do on the first Sunday in October, and the rest of the year hardly any mention, if any, about abortion or euthanasia. I believe that this one Sunday a month attitude is why anti-life attitudes are still so prevalant today.

I agree with you. For me respecting life is a day by day, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute occurrence. Anyone who looks upon the face of a baby, a neighbor, an elderly person must see the face of Jesus in that person and thus glorify God accordingly.
This one Sunday, I believe, is set apart as a public display in support of life from the womb to the tomb.

I saw that. They’re doing that in my parish as well. I just wish that this was the focus all year long, and not at some designated time. I know 40 days is longer than a month, but just barely.
We used to have a clinic next door to one of the most notorious abortionists in our area until he finally died. He did not make it pleasant for us. He had an attorney who had an in with the sheriff’s dept., and they would constantly harass us with some of the most ridiculous “charges”.
My husband, who is fearless, tried to do phone counseling, but the pro-death advocates came after him for a variety of reasons. We’ve had death threats and all sorts of unpleasantness associated with being active in pro-life activities.
