Mormons (LDS) Know More About Bible Than Other Christians
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 09/28/2010 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Posted on 09/29/2010 3:05:05 PM PDT by zippythepinhead

Atheists and agnostics know more about major world religions than many people of faith, while Mormons can answer more Bible questions than their Catholic and mainline Protestant counterparts.

Those are among the somewhat startling conclusions about religious literacy in America the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life drew after surveying 3,412 Americans.

Some of the multiple-choice questions were relatively simple: Where was Jesus born and who led the exodus from Egypt? What religion was Mother Teresa, what day does the Jewish Sabbath begin and what is the name of Islam’s holy book?

Others were more obscure: What is Indonesia’s dominant religion? Which Christians teach that salvation comes through faith alone?

About half the Protestants (53 percent) couldn’t correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation. Fewer than half of Americans (47 percent) knew the Dalai Lama is Buddhist and only 38 percent correctly associated Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism.

John Morehead, director of the Western Institute for Intercultural Studies in Salt Lake City, had already noted religious illiteracy in the general population as well as in the evangelical community. But he did not expect Mormons to top them in their biblical fluency.

“Mormons tend to emphasize Mormon scriptures like the Book of Mormon rather than the Bible in their devotional life,” Morehead said in an e-mail.

Even some LDS scholars were surprised to find Mormons at the top.

Yes Resty, not true can be used in place of untrue in common usage...

Zip, I testify that the Word of God...is the Bible. And Joseph Smith was a con artist.

There is historical physical evidence of the events that happened in the Bible. There are very few, if any historical physical evidence that "proves out" the BOM.

Hey...let me ask you, as I'm having trouble getting an answer.

Yes or no...Was Brigham Young a racist and a bigot?

Well since you asked...

1. Presbyterianism history is traced back to the teachings of John Calvin. Who was not a prophet. He was an ex-Catholic priest.

2. Presbyterianism do not have nor have they ever claimed to have any face to face communication with God.

3. Presbyterianism does not have any authority from God to teach or do anything else that is or will be recognized by God.

4. Presbyterianism is not patterned after the original Church that Jesus established.

5. Presbyterianism does not give the Gift of the Holy Ghost as described in Acts 8:14-19

6. Presbyterianism does not have living prophets, which fails the Rev 11: 3-13 test.

7. Presbyterianism does not teach that we are judged by our works.

8. Presbyterianism does not teach that the gospel is preached to the dead.

9. Presbyterianism knows nothing about baptism for the dead.

10. Presbyterianism does not recognize scripture not handed down by the Catholic church.

11. Presbyterianism knows nothing of the after life.

12. Presbyterianism knows nothing of the pre-earth life.

13. Presbyterianism is the philosophies of men mingled with scripture.

14. Presbyterianism practices infant baptism.

That's a pretty good start...

Jesus said join none of them!

YOU can't read.

'jesus' said not a word!

The First Vision (also called the grove experience) refers to a vision that Joseph Smith, Jr. said he received in 1820 when he was fourteen years old, in a wooded area in Manchester, New York. Originally framed as a personal theophany in which Smith received a forgiveness of sins, Smith eventually framed the vision to reinforce his authority as the founder and prophet of the Latter Day Saint movement. According to an account Smith told in the 1840s, he went to the woods to pray about which church to join but fell into the grip of an evil power that nearly overtook him. At the last moment, he was rescued by two shining "personages" (presumably Jesus and God the Father) who hovered above him. One of the beings told Smith not to join any existing churches because all taught incorrect doctrines.

1. Presbyterianism history is traced back to the teachings of John Calvin. Who was not a prophet. He was an ex-Catholic priest.

Mormonism is traced back to smith who was not a prophet but who was a convicted con-man and occultist

2. Presbyterianism do not have nor have they ever claimed to have any face to face communication with God.

which of the 9 different stories smith conjured up are you referring to.

3. Presbyterianism does not have any authority from God to teach or do anything else that is or will be recognized by God.

mormonism is that 'other gospel' warned about by scripture. Jesus will tell its followers to 'depart for I never knew you'

4. Presbyterianism is not patterned after the original Church that Jesus established.

Not that the mormon church is either - where are its women prophets? Where did Jesus establish 15 apostles

5. Presbyterianism does not give the Gift of the Holy Ghost as described in Acts 8:14-19

Of course - who laid hands upon them in Acts 2 and Acts 10

6. Presbyterianism does not have living prophets, which fails the Rev 11: 3-13 test.

Mormonism has 'living prophets' who fail the tests of Deuteronomy chapters 13 and 18. BTW, what are your three favorite prophecies produced by monson so far?

7. Presbyterianism does not teach that we are judged by our works.

That is because we are judged by our acceptance of Jesus by grace through faith and not of our own works.

8. Presbyterianism does not teach that the gospel is preached to the dead.

Both the Bible and the bom teach that one only has this life to make their eternal decision - no further chances after death.

9. Presbyterianism knows nothing about baptism for the dead.

As well they shouldn't - as it was not a practice of the early church.

10. Presbyterianism does not recognize scripture not handed down by the Catholic church.

They go back to the extant greek and hebrew MS.

11. Presbyterianism knows nothing of the after life.

They know plenty - they just reject mormon godhood claims

12. Presbyterianism knows nothing of the pre-earth life.

They are in good standing, since the bom also knows nothing about the so-called mormon 'pre-life'. But then since mormon prelife is false, there is nothing to know.

13. Presbyterianism is the philosophies of men mingled with scripture.

And mormonism are the crass philosophies of smith with mangled scripture and bogus revelations.

14. Presbyterianism practices infant baptism.

LOL, from those who practice necro dunking.

Hey R, this has nothing to do with the topic but I thought of you last weekend. My husband and I had an opportunity to attend an event where Cat Cora was the featured Chef. We got to meet her, and I though man Resty would really like this.
She is very nice, her accent is much stronger in person than on TV, and she is really short.
Anyway back to the topic.

Magic mushrooms it may well have been...

the hallucinations could have been brought on by Joey Smith eating mushrooms or some other type of drug...

Joey Smith handed out mind altering substances to his disciples in their pagan places of worship...

Some claimed to have weird visions and saw things after ingesting chemically charged stuff..

Drugs of all kinds have been known about for centuries...

Socrates used hemlock (opium) to commit suicide...

There were opium dens during Joey Smiths day...

It is possible that Joey Smith and his followers took opium...

can you say Magic Poppies ???

Joey Smith admired the Islamics and wanted to be like them...a 2nd Mohammad...

The Islamics used Opium from about the start of their religion..

Opium in the form of laudanum was used before Joey Smiths time for sleep and a pain killer...

in fact just decades before Joey smiths birth opium was used as a cure all...

There would have been no law against its use (not that that would have stopped Joey Smith

Joey Smith may have been addicted to it as he had had major operations on his leg when he was a boy and he hated pain...

In 1841 President Harrison used opium for illness and it was used by women for childbirth etc...

It was called “God’s Own Medicine”...

Why wouldnt Joey Smith and his followers use something called “God’s Own Medicine” in their pagan temple worship ???

Opium was used so much that there were more than 100,000 opium addicts in the US in the last half of the 19th century...

many of the addicts were women...I could see Joey Smith using opium to seduce his unwilling his young victims...for Joey Smith and his base lustful appetites it was whatever worked to satisfy them.....

Servant girls were often lured into prostitution with the use of opium so I doubt if Joey smith would feel any remorse or moral outrage at the idea of using that road for himself...

For Smith to introduce the use of opium into his cultish religion practices is not unlikely...
