Pope Benedict XVI yesterday stopped to give a police dog an unexpected pat while thanking some of the 2,000 members of the West Midlands Police who had helped to protect him during his visit.
After meeting the seminarians of England, Wales and Scotland at Oscott College, Sutton Coldfield, the Pope saw Jake, a black Springador who acts as an explosives sniffer for the police.
Wading through a crowd of public servants the Pope was greeted by the dog, who appeared to enjoy the attention....

LOL!
Katy just steals socks out of the laundry and brings them to me.
Ruby steals kleenex out of the trash cans. And Puppy Roca out of the cat box.
Labs are weird.

Renewing Catholic Higher Education September 21, 2010
Dear Friend in Christ:
Just hours before John Henry Newman’s beatification — Pope Benedict XVI visited Newman’s private quarters at the Birmingham Oratory.
We have for you an EXCLUSIVE VIDEO of what he saw there, filmed during my own visit to the Oratory last December.
**VIDEO
And because what the Holy Father saw is so important, I urge you to watch this video and pass on this letter to your family and friends!
Let me tell you, the beatification Mass was splendid and I was there, praying for the intentions of all of our supporters who sent them in over the last few weeks!
But today I have an urgent request, because Newman’s reputation and important work are under attack.
We need your very special donation today to help preserve Blessed John Henry Newman’s legacy!
You see, there are many leading activists and agenda-driven scholars who want to claim this most holy priest for their secular, heterodox cause, as if Newman would be opposed to the renewal in the Church that Pope Benedict is leading. Some are even shamelessly promoting the idea that Cardinal Newman was actively homosexual. Nothing could be more false!
In fact, this is all OUTRAGEOUS! Pope Benedict himself has said that Blessed Newman “left us an outstanding example of faithfulness” and “lived an exemplary priestly life.”
And Newman described his own life’s work as the fight against Liberalism — by which he meant a kind of secularism that doubts the Truth of God and pushes Christianity to the margins of education and society.
Sound familiar?
It is this same secularism which The Cardinal Newman Society fights today on Catholic college campuses, and which pervades American culture.
That is why Blessed John Henry Newman is so important today, and we need your help to protect his authentic legacy!

Dogs are generally good judges of character..
I live with 2 ..
That’s hilarious!
Xena just did it AGAIN! I awoke to find the litterbox pulled from the wall & sand all over the floor. Gaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!
Ruby can flatten herself like a wharf rat to wiggle under it, but that takes time . . . .
LOL, yeah I even have a baby gate at the doorway myself. But normally I close it only when I leave the house. Reckon that’s gotta change, dangit.
i LOVE the caption! i did not realize it was the inherent warlike nature of all papergoods that caused those sorts of scenes in my house! LOL!
That’s great. Love this pope!
Im no dog expert, but for a family, they seem like the perfect breed.

Same here. We love our lab. BTW, I read that the Labrador retriever is the most popular breed in the world right now.
Did my heart good to read those excerpts. Thank you so much for posting them.
They are looking great.
They are looking great.
Katy did indeed pass her tests both days this past weekend with flying colors (including Sunday in the POURING rain!) to gain her Started Hunting Retriever title in HRC/UKC.
Film of Katy's first water bird on Saturday
Miss Ruby took leave of her senses and blew her water test on the first day and her land blind on the second. Bless her heart, she's my ADHD poster child, but she loves retrieving SO much that we'll just continue to work along. She has to settle down eventually, maybe at age 10?
