At sundown, we begin Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. In the Scriptures, the Israelites were commanded by the Lord to fast and pray and bring their sacrifices to the Temple in Jerusalem, and then to ask for the Lords forgiveness for all the sins they and their nation had committed that year. Only the sacrifice of a perfect animal, done with a humble, repentant heart, and with faith in Gods mercy and grace, would bring about forgiveness of sins.
For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for ones life. (Leviticus 17:11) In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. (Hebrews 9:22) The problem is: What does one do to receive atonement in the modern age, without a Temple? How can one make sacrifices and receive forgiveness of sins and thus the right to enter the holiness of heaven and live with the Lord in heaven forever and ever without being able to sacrifice a perfect lamb at the Temple in Jerusalem, where the Lord designated all sacrifices to occur? The destruction of the Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. was a huge blow to Judaism, because it deprived Jews of the place to receive atonement from God.

The destruction of the Temple did not end Jewish customs, for sure. One of the points raised in the article though, is that without the Temple, there is no substance to these customs, without the practical means to carry out many of the commandments of the Mosaic covenant. How can one cleanse oneself, and receive atonement, if one is ALWAYS in violation of the covenant because of this situation?
Many Jews nowadays believe that this mortal life is all that is there for them, despite the promises in the Torah of the resurrection. I believe this is just a symptom of trying to reconcile their belief that the Messiah did not come yet, with the situation they are in: not able to expect all the promises of the Covenant, since they cannot fulfill their duties under it.
This is a kind of spiritual pessimism, and the only cure short of reestablishing the Temple (which would have to be commanded by the Lord, since He removed it), is the Messiah.
Actually they still perform them but at the Mount of Olives. And it’s symbolic.
“OMG!! Pray to the Lord for me and ask that non of the things you have spoken of may befall me. geesh.”
Am I correct in understanding that you take this statement of Simon Magus as demonstration of confession? Where does he confess his sins? Where does Peter answer him? Where is the prescription of penance? Where is he pronounced forgiven?
...and we went to synagogue instead.
“Actually they still perform them but at the Mount of Olives. And its symbolic.”
Symbolic is all that they could be. Without a High Priest or the Ark, the rituals simply cannot be performed as commanded by God. I can symbolically sacrifice a blemish-free bull in my backyard, and sprinkle some blood around, but this is not what the Lord commanded.
We Baptists do believe the Bible (yes, sola scriptura), we just dont think it teaches your Catholic "talking points".
OF course there's no penance...Jesus paid the price, in full...
right.....no matter WHAT you do...KILL, STEAL....CHEAT...ADULTERER....yes, he paid for your sins so you don’t EVER have to...yeah....go sin as much as you want to,
But you don’t “Take this bread, this is MY BODY....Take and drink, this is MY BLOOD”......so while you THINK you do what the BibLe says, you really don’t. Do you ever EXAMINE HIS WORDS???
You mean like saying 3 hail Marys while you are typing with your feet???
If you really believed what God says in the scriptures, you'd know you won't get the penance you deserve...What you deserve is eternity in Hell, like the rest of us...
There is no penance you could possibly dream up that could keep you out of Hell...We escape Hell because Jesus became our living sacrifice...He paid the price for us...
Saying a couple of our Fathers will cleanse your sin, eh??? Sorry, no cigar...Having a contrite spirit while you confess TO GOD (not some sinner dressed in a costume) is all that God asks for because that is all we are capable of...
OK....we’ll see at the end of our lives.
I keep asking, but the only answer I seem to get is that everyone else is reading the Bible wrong. I guess God gave Peter a secret decoder ring, along with the keys to the Kingdom.
We Baptists recognize symbolic language when we see it ... and we apply the historical grammatical method of interpretation. We would be foolish to claim that Jesus is actually a 4x8 peice of pine on hinges just because he said “I am the door.”
Without the Temple can’t be done of course ... but until G-d brings an earthquake to Jerusalem and tumbles the Dome of the Rock so the Temple can be rebuilt, then .....
“Bye jove I think hes got it”
OMG!!!!!!!!!!! there are no words.......
Presumption??? It's called 'assurance of salvation' which is described thru out the scriptures given to the adopted church...
Worship God instead of creating rationalizations to assuage ones conscience with handpicked bible verses which can be refuted with other verses.
And the verses you pick can be refuted with the verses that I pick...Know what that proves??? It proves that you don't have a clue about dividing the word of Truth...
It's not often a Catholic will acknowledge that there are scriptures that don't line up with each other...It's not often that a Catholic knows enough scripture to realize that sometimes scripture doesn't line up all the time...At least there's some hope for you...Not much, but some...
“right.....no matter WHAT you do...KILL, STEAL....CHEAT...ADULTERER....yes, he paid for your sins so you dont EVER have to...yeah....go sin as much as you want to,”
And what offering can you make to the Lord your God that is acceptable to pay your debt? What currency have you that will satisfy Him?
Confession, and Penance, dear Boogieman.....and I will STILL have to do time in Purgatory so that I may enter into heaven with a CLEAN, PURE SOUL.
Have you never heard the term Biblical Hermeneutics?
