As welcome signs go, it is one of the more unusual ones.

And for visitors to Kiryas Joel, a small Jewish community in Orange County, New York State, it has provoked quite a reaction.

For the sign doesn't just greet visitors, but warns them to dress appropriately for their visit, amongst other things.

Written in both English and Spanish, the sign, posted by Congregation Yetev Lev at the entrances to the village, warns visitors to cover their legs and arms, maintain gender separation in public places and use appropriate language.

The tradition in the villages of Satmar Hasidic Jews is modesty. Even on the hottest of days, most residents cover up from head to toe, with unmarried men and women kept apart at all times.

Women also cannot wear provocative clothes as men are not supposed to see anything that inspires inappropriate thoughts.

It does sound like what the Founders had in mind. States and communities establishing their own standards.

this is just a dress code (/s)

seriously, there are certain areas where people of the orthodox faith have wires encircling an area which is supposed to rerepresent the walls. These are on public streets, very unobtrusive but it is akin to the state funded kosher police.

Sure, through properly-constituted local governments. Is "Congregation Yetev Lev" a government? Or does it own the streets and sidewalks in Kiryas Joel? I don't think it is, or it does, so it's no more a "standard" than the sign in my front yard requesting all 10s to wear bikinis.

They aren’t requiring anyone to comply with their requests so I don’t think that’s relevant here.
