As welcome signs go, it is one of the more unusual ones.
And for visitors to Kiryas Joel, a small Jewish community in Orange County, New York State, it has provoked quite a reaction.
For the sign doesn't just greet visitors, but warns them to dress appropriately for their visit, amongst other things.
Written in both English and Spanish, the sign, posted by Congregation Yetev Lev at the entrances to the village, warns visitors to cover their legs and arms, maintain gender separation in public places and use appropriate language.
The tradition in the villages of Satmar Hasidic Jews is modesty. Even on the hottest of days, most residents cover up from head to toe, with unmarried men and women kept apart at all times.
Women also cannot wear provocative clothes as men are not supposed to see anything that inspires inappropriate thoughts.

Girl on girl is ok?
Seems modest, I think I like it.
If Hassidim can decide how people can dress and congregate on the public streets of a city, then do not complain if Moslems want to do the same thing in cities where they are a majority. And no, I am not equating Hassidim with Moslems, but the legal principle is the same.
Sounds kinda homo-ish.
Is this the entrances to a city or a Synagogue?
Republicans must sit in back of the bus.
You think your Homeowners Association has rules, this is something else.
Balkanization of America continuing on a nice steady pace.
You want to know the difference of the Jews and other ethnic groups that came here before and had their own little ‘neighborhoods’? They could live the way they wanted to live, and were able to deal with other people being in their neighborhood, living a different way from them, and not having to put up signs to force those other people to be like them.
This crap can only work with certain types of groups. They’ll let Scinetologists in Clearwater do this garbage, they will liet this place do that, I would bet the ACLU and the government would file lawsuits against a CHRISTIAN town who posted the Ten Commandments at the entrance saying to visitors they need to obey these rules inside their town. Hell, or even if they used Kiryas Joel’s rules for that matter.
Oh?
I have no interest in walking around in a black, long sleeved clothes with a black jacket with a black hat in the middle of the summer.
Not bashing what they choose to do, just sayin’.
Really? Because I doubt you could walk around your area sporting a g-string or chaps, go for it. : )
Town
It’s not a government sponsored sign, but rather put up by the synagogue on private property.
The full article explains that. (Darn rules imposed by the courts)
They just ask that people dress modestly, not in black. : ) I am wondering how they enforce these rules.
What’s the big deal? The sign invites you to honor local values with respect to dress and behavior.
This place sounds like a real s***-hole.
According to 2008 census figures, the village has the highest poverty rate in the nation. More than two-thirds of residents live below the federal poverty line and 40% receive food stamps.[3]
The 2000 census also reports that only 6.2% of village residents spoke English at home, one of the lowest such percentages in the United States. Over 89% of residents spoke Yiddish at home, while 2.3% spoke Hebrew.[12] Of the Yiddish-speaking population in 2000, 46% spoke English “not well” or “not at all.” Overall, including those who primarily spoke Hebrew and European languages as well as primary Yiddish speakers, 46% of Kiryas Joel residents speak English “not well” or “not at all.”[13]

Yup....of course that's based on reported income. Also, this is the area (including New City) that voted more than 90% for HRC for Senator back in 2000.....tyhe fact that Slick Willie had pardeoned some rabbi from there had nothing to do with this vote though.
That’s the problem with the (some? most?) haredim. Their business sense is somewhere between zero and zilch. No trade, no manufacturing, no practical skills.
America used to be a place where communities and schools were supposed to reflect the values of those who established them.
These are the same folks (Hasidic Jews) who walk to the front of the line in public stores and ignore the people standing in line - apparently because their traditions say nobody else counts.
Rude as hell, if y’ask me...
