To: Salvation

Using “Liberia” with a church name reminded me of something. A couple decades or so ago, some African ruler built a huge and obscenely expensive Catholic church as basically his way of buying himself into Heaven. The Catholic Church refused to consecrate it unless he changed his ways and actually started helping out the poor in his country. IMHO, it’s one of the coolest things the Church ever did.

Can anyone remember the country, president and church? Ivory Coast sounds familiar, but I’m not sure.
