The patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Snows and St. Mary ad praesepe because of the relic of the crib of Bethlehem reserved there. Originally built by Pope St. Liberius (352-66).

Catholic Word of the Day Ping!
If you arent on this Catholic Word of the Day Ping list and would like to be, please send me a FReepmail.
The original building (long since destroyed) was supposed to have been built by Pope Liberius (r. 352-356).
Using “Liberia” with a church name reminded me of something. A couple decades or so ago, some African ruler built a huge and obscenely expensive Catholic church as basically his way of buying himself into Heaven. The Catholic Church refused to consecrate it unless he changed his ways and actually started helping out the poor in his country. IMHO, it’s one of the coolest things the Church ever did.
Can anyone remember the country, president and church? Ivory Coast sounds familiar, but I’m not sure.
Might be the tyrant (in my opinion) Mugabe.
I’ve always laughed at that name — mugging a bee?
I don’t think Mugabe. The Church had this buy by the balls, spritually speaking. IIRC he gave in to the demands.
