Salt Lake County went for Obi by less than 300 votes. Hardly a resounding victory. Due mostly to weak R candidate rather than love of Obi.

“It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” [Patrick Henry, May 1765 Speech to the House of Burgesses]

Thank a soldier, sailor or other member of the armed services for that freedom. Including those who also happen to be Mormons.

Oddly, Flag waving Mormons have low military enlistment rates.

Utah ranks very high on eligibility, but at almost the bottom of enlisting.

not that all Baptists are complete loonies

I hope not since they are second in numbers only to Catholics in America. The Southern Baptists alone in America out number all of the Jews, or the Mormons in the entire world, and the majority of Baptists are not Southern Baptists.

Flag waving Mormons have low military enlistment rates.

Sure they do, especially compared to Native Americans from Plains and Rocky Mountain states, a group represented in my ethnic background.

But you won't find me haunting threads constantly complaining that European Americans aren't patriotic.

The last time I saw any hard data on the topic, they were counting only people between ages 18 and 25. By custom, tradition, or whatever, Mormon women marry and start families younger, so obviously contribute to some drop in enlistment rate. Mormon men serve missions, get into ROTC programs and the like where they are older than 25 by the time they graduate and enlist, so would damage the particular rate which you are describing.

It is sort of like comparing the voting rate for Obama in the most secular, liberal, urban and diverse counties in Utah to the voting rate for Obama in one of the most conservative, rural and church going counties in Texas and using it to "prove" Mormons are not as conservative as this or that protestant group.

I have never seen anyone doing that with Mormons either, have you?

By the way, Mormons have a very low enlistment rate, and no excuses really explain that lack of patriotism, America's face of Mormonism currently is Mitt Romney, a man that has fought and spent desperately to lead America as Commander in chief during wartime, he himself avoided military service, his five sons avoided and continue to avoid military service, and every male in the Romney line has always avoided military service since their arrival long before the Civil War.

Mormons and military service, something doesn't add up for such a supposed politically conservative religion.

Duck and run...

Too chicken to face the enemy...

Deferments were equal to a mormon caucus thread...

Williard Mitt Romney managed with his Daddy’s help to dodge the draft at least 2 times during Nam...

as Gov George Romney was connected to the draft board and got him deferments..

When he claims he wanted to pick up a gun and fight in Vietnam he is lying...

none of his FIVE sons ever joined the military and none of his ancestors ever did either...

Even Barry Soetoro has a family that is better than the Romneys...Barrys grandfather served overseas during WWII...

When the Obamas can beat you in patriotism and valor you got to be low down...

Romney was living in a mansion in Paris and dr4iving a top of the line Citroen in 1968-1970 while non-mormon boys were living in the jungle and getting killed...

In Utah deferments were handed out to mormons like candy...

You too chicken err you dont want to fight for the apostates/infidels err you dont want to join up...you dont have to...heres a deferment...go on a mormon sales job for 2 years and when you get back the war will be over...

I know of no Baptist or Catholic boy who got a deferment and spent 2 years proslytizing Christianity and harassing people on their door steps for 2 years in lew of fighting for his country like a good conservative patriot who loves his country...

I met lots of Baptists and Catholics in the SEVEN years I served here and overseas during Nam but I never met even one mormon...

and mormons are not shy...they think they are all that and will let you know...

All the Chaplains were Baptist pastors or Catholic priests or Lutheran, Methodists and lots of Presbyterians...

No mormons..

Gee,that's weird, because I met lots of them at all the Sacrament Meetings I attended during the TWENTY-SIX years I served before, during and after the Viet Nam War.That was on board seven different aircraft carriers and military bases all over the world...including Da Nang. I've only met two Mormon chaplains, one who recently retired from the Air Force. Let's not forget the Mormon I served under who commanded one of those carriers,or the Mormon MOH Air Force member,an A-1E driver whose name escapes me.

To cut to the chase I call BS on your remarks.

"If you bent down & worshiped the tulips in your backyard, it doesn't pre-empt your neighbor from eventually making a forthright comment about it. "

. And pulling up the neighbors so he could not worship.

>>> Let’s bash the Mormons again! Bet the same cast of incestuous, smarmy little pseudo-Christians surface to render their not so deep thoughts....

Depend on it.

>>> Why do certain supposed Christians at FR obsess over Mormons and ignore their own warts?

Add one and one:

Mitt Romney, Mormons, = bogeyman

Besides, racist comments about blacks might get them banned. Bigotry against Mormons seems enthusiastically accepted. It’s better then nothing.

AH No...

We often post the racist comments against blacks that are found in the bigoted mormons doctrines..

Nobody gets banned for posting them...

after all the mormons were publicly bigoted against black men until 1978...

and now its under the covers and only against black women publicly...

There still has not been a black in power in the mormon corporation due to ongoing bigotry...

How could posting the truth be verboten ???

or WHO would not want the truth exposed ???

Salt Lake County is not populated mostly by Mormons. Especially Salt Lake City, the capitol. Mormons are in the minority downtown. Like most large cities, this is the blue spot in a red state. Salt Lake City proper is what gave us Rocky Anderson, a large gay community, and an anti Mormon newspaper (Salt Lake Tribune).

Get outside the city, and there is little love for Obama and the Democratic Party. Clinton actually came in third against Bush and Perot here. As a whole, the state is very red, you just need to hold your nose when you go downtown.

AH No kid...

It was Mitt Romney who gave Salt Lake Rocky Anderson...

It was Mitt Romney who supporyed the gay community in MAS...

As for the Trib, there are articles about the mormons every day in its pages...carefully researched and truthfully expository...

If you are looking for fluff pieces try the Utah Womens Home Journal, loosely called the Deseret news...

THats all news to me...

The title of this thread is “Why mormons leave”

SO

Why did the mormons leave downtown Salt Lake ???

After all their religious city blocks are right there...

Did the mormon god get a revelation after declaring all of Utah territory to be a 1000 year Third Reich ???

Has the theocratic dictatorship shrunk to just one City Mall block where regular people are frisked by Black Shirts for walking on the public sidewalk ???

The general forum list is often so full of religion posts that FR seems more like a religion website than a political one. Some are posting religion articles and vanities in bunches. It's getting out of hand and is changing the nature of FR.

The various religious groups are clearly hoping that FR can be an evangelizing tool, but that is not the purpose of this site. A clear description of FR is right on the front page:

Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.

Perhaps helpful people like you should engage in religion discussions on a religious website instead of "inviting" me to go elsewhere.
