Ex-Evangelical Protestant dissects conflict with Catholics
The Record ^ | Wednesday, 21 July 2010 | Anthony Barich

Evangelical Protestants are taught to recruit Catholics by exploiting their lack of Bible knowledge, but use Scripture out of context to make Catholic beliefs look flawed.

This is the claim of Catholic apologist Steve Ray, in Perth from the United States of America earlier this month as part of a national tour. Mr Ray used to take on this role.

“We were trained to evangelise Catholics – we believed you are not saved, that you are going to hell as you follow the Pope instead of Jesus, you pray to Mary instead of God, you have tradition instead of Scripture, you thought you got saved by doing good works instead of by faith in Jesus,” he told about 60 people on Thursday, 8 July, at Trinity College, East Perth.

“It was our job to get you saved and become real Bible Christians. This is what Evangelicals think – most of them, even in Australia.”

He said that he was taught the right questions to ask and memorised up to 15 verses that “were good to use with Catholics”.

Mr Ray, married to Janet for 33 years with four children, said he and his wife went from being “anti-Catholic Baptists” to “crossing an uncrossable chasm and becoming Catholics”.

The Rays were not alone. They opened their home for two years to people seeking to discuss their differences with Catholics and explained why they converted, “even if people hated Catholics”.

In that time, Mr Ray said over 200 people joined the Catholic Church.

Addressing several key issues that cause the at-times vicious divide, especially in the United States, between Protestants and Catholics, Mr Ray said he achieved “great success” by asking carefully selected questions and backing them up with isolated Scripture quotes.

Well, the Apostolic Succession is right there in the Bible. The Confession of Peter at Caesarea Philippi, the gift to him of the keys, the replacement of Judas Iscariot by Matthias.

Of course there are also the writings of the early Church fathers, men who in some cases knew the Apostles personally. And the Didache. It's about as well-documented as anything that old can be.

I know many people who have a very close relationship with Yeshuah (yes, the Creator) not because they found him in Scripture or in the Catholic Church. He personally intervened to pull their butts out of the fires of personal destruction (substance abuse, mental illness/madness, sexual addiction, prostitution, etc).

Yes,dear friend, but I can attest that conversion of heart does not stop there, because when this happens you want to know more TRUTH (what God is)It should also be no secret that when someone commits to Christ that the devil will rush in to try and lead a person into error.

I was a protestant at the time of what a protestant would call a "born again" experience and when I searched further through prayer, fasting etc.. I found out so many errors of protestantism that was NOTHING like the early Christians who suffered and died for their faith.

I also understand that people have different journeys to TRUTH as well

What personal arrogance leads you to believe that those personally rescued from the pits of hell would stop there.

You sound like a recent graduate from West Point trying to give advice to people on the front line.

You may think you know, but if you really knew, you would be quiet and prayerful!

Where in the world did spiritual humility go?

No, you see this differently than I...Peter was not who the church was built on ..Christ is. ‘There is no other foundation laid than that in Christ Jesus’... If the church claims to be built on Peter than they have missed the mark and high calling that is in Christ. He alone is the Head and the foundation...as well as the chief cornerstone..of which He fits and joins the body of believers together.

As for Matthias..who by the way we here very little of...it is interesting to note that the disciple's decided they should pick the replacement when Christ already had in mind His own choice....all other disciple's were appointed by Christ so now they determined to jump ahead of God and control the situation by filling the space with someone of their own choosing. But I believe that since all the disciple's saw Christ in the flesh...(Matthias did not) I believe that Christ himself selected Paul and He was the replacement for Judas, because He certainly saw Christ on the road to Damascus....Thus Paul was the replacement for Judas. Matthias rather sinks out of the picture pretty much.

Christ's consecration of His followers and their successors make this a living tradition not of mere men by of the Holy Spirit. Christ addressed His posterity when He appointed these Apostolic successors to lead His Church. The Catholic/Orthodox will last until the end of time while the newly minted protestant Houses of Hersey fail almost as soon as they begin. Christ appointed apostolic successors to carry on His work not to take a 1500 year hiatus for the protestant reformers to come along.

As an alien to the Bride of Christ it is doubtful if you will share in the inheritance promised us by our Lord. Your belief is imperfect reeking of you prideful interpretations. The Body of Believers is ONE not 30,000+ discrete heresies which are all predicated on the sin of Pride , the sin which Satan committed. Satan would not serve God and you refuse to acknowledge His Bride which He established before His ascension. The only hope for you is to be judged with lack of capacity which could possibly excuse your ignorance in this matter.

Plenty of people backslide and some even lose faith, this is a reality, not arrogance You may think you know, but if you really knew, you would be quiet and prayerful!

I'm a simple man who leads a simple life and spend many hours in prayer and attending Adoration praying for others

Where in the world did spiritual humility go?

Humility is about denying self ,living in truth making no compromises for faith even if it mean death and persecution. I would gladly accept death for the good of others if that is God's will

You seem to be in a spirit of anger.

I will pray for you at Adoration this week

Of course Christ is made the sure foundation, the head and cornerstone, just like it says in the hymn (note the date).

But the Pope is only the Vicar of Christ, as Peter was. He doesn't take one jot or tittle from the greatness of Our Lord. And this pope in particular is less into Marian theology and more into Christology than his predecessor. I think you would be surprised and pleased by his lovely little book, Jesus of Nazareth. It's a splendid read, written by a very humble but incredibly learned man.

I won't sing "Long Live the Pope", but it's a fun hymn. You can look it up.

Thank you for sharing this Sonof DarkSkies....I have known people who have been lifted out of the pit who have stated similar to what you said here in this post. There testimonies are riviting and very real. They surely do know what Christ has done for them! There is scripture as well that attests to the fact that those who have been forgiven much are much grateful...those forgiven little grateful little. They truly “SEE Christ”...may you and those as you continue to love Him and know Him more and more every single day. You know and they know what a “relationship” with Christ is all about.

Please accept my apology for getting a bit round-up about this topic.

It's just that I have seen things and know some of the incredible stories of Salvation.

Things you wouldn't believe...

Frankly, I wish I didn't know of them...hell is one of those things you wish you could remove from your memory. But you are thankful the Lord allowed you to get a glimpse of it because it changes you forever.

I have been lucky enough to see what Jesus/Yeshuah is doing while the rest of us sit around and debate theology.

Forgive me as well if I sounded harsh in any way

I actually would believe you. If I posted some of the things I have seen I think people would call me nuts for sure(they might anyway)

I wish you a Blessed evening!

Yes...thx caww.

There is indeed a gateway to hell right here on the surface of this planet.

I have watched people spend their lives wandering casually in and out of its threshold.

Some have come back in the arms of Jesus...and that changes all of us (those of us who still have open hearts).

Some have disappeared into it (but nothing is impossible with the Lord, so nothing is hopeless).

I think we should pray and keep the faith.

Our eternal salvation rests in Christ...He is sufficient for the task of cleansing and abiding in us...for teaching and instruction, for life and breath as we live our days out. We don't have to depend on rituals and nor ‘the catholic church to guide us to eternal salvation’....it is ours now and for eternity. We are free from the laws and traditions of men....we are complete in Him....Just as He said. And He has sealed us with His Spirit which abides in us. We don't have to work our way to a higher plain with or to Him....He said we may enter boldly into His throne of Grace...and we do so thru the finished work of Christ...He now sees us thru His Son.

However the enemy of mens souls is know as ‘the accuser of the brethren’....when God looks to see what the accusation is Jesus steps in and says, ‘Father, I paid for that. He is our intercessor, Mary no any other Saint has paid the price before God to listen, hear or answer prayer...Christ only paid that price before God and He alone has that power... and it is His by and thru the life He lived and laid down willing for each one of us. That is how God now sees us...thru His Son...not any other.

No, you see this differently than I...Peter was not who the church was built on ..Christ is.

Do you read English, is it your first language?

Mat 16:18 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.

back in the arms of Jesus...and that changes all of us

.....and that is exactly what separates Christ and Christianity from every other religion..."changed lives". You are exactly right! You and your friends are walking testimonies to Him and are mighty instruments in His hands to those who walk on the edge...because you now live! I am so very grateful for those He rescues....you give all who know of friends or family, in or heading to that pit, hope that "There is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still"...thank you...and thank them.

10. Show that the Bible requires that the Church ignore everything but the Bible.

Sorry to disillusion you, but, God does not have a mother.

Jesus has a Mother
God does not have a mother.
Therefore Jesus is not God?

I say:

Jesus is God.
Jesus has a mother.
Therefore God has a mother.

Mad Dawg..you and I have been down this road before. I have never said that other literature isn't helpful in our understanding Historically and such. But the traditions of the catholic faith are simply that..traditions of men...some believe they are equal to the scriptures, I do not.

The scriptures make it very clear the Bible as we know it to be is God-Breathed and I believe it. ...man can claim other works are..and they do...but if those works do not stand the test of scripture they have no authority over scripture.
