Russian Orthodox patriarch praises Pope, rips Protestant compromises with secularism

July 21, 2010

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, praised Pope Benedict and blasted Protestant bodies that have accepted women’s ordination and caved in to the secular culture on homosexuality.

Noting that the Pope is criticized by “liberal theologians and liberal mass media in the West,” Patriarch Kirill said that “on many public and moral issues his approach fully coincides with the approach of the Russian Orthodox Church. This gives us an opportunity to advocate Christian values together with the Catholic Church, in particular at international organizations and on the international arena.”

On the other hand, some Protestant bodies have “let sinful elements of the world enter their internal world and justify these elements, if they are offered by secular society … secular philosophical liberal stock phrases are repeated within Protestant churches and take root in religious thinking.”

For example, “the word of God is distorted to please the secular liberal standard” on homosexuality, the patriarch noted. “It is written in black and white that it is a sin.”

Patriarch Kirill agrees with Pope on many issues

Moscow, July 19, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has said that he sees eye-to-eye with Pope Benedict XVI on many pressing moral issues.

"I must say that the stance of incumbent Pope Benedict XVI gives rise to optimism," he said in an interview with Ukrainian media ahead of his visit to the country.

He reminded reporters that the Pope is often criticized by "liberal theologians and liberal mass media in the West" for his views.

"However, on many public and moral issues his approach fully coincides with the approach of the Russian Orthodox Church. This gives us an opportunity to advocate Christian values together with the Catholic Church, in particular at international organizations and on the international arena," he said.

At he same time he recognized "very dangerous phenomena" in contemporary Protestantism when Christians "let sinful elements of the world enter their internal world and justify these elements, if they are offered by secular society" and as a result "secular philosophical liberal stock phrases are repeated within Protestant Churches and take root in religious thinking."

It is in this way that the theme of women clergy appeared in the West when "the secular notion of human rights was incorporated in theology, in church practices," he said.

"Another similar issue is the attitude to homosexuality. The word of God is distorted to please the secular liberal standard. It is written in black and white that it is a sin," he said.

He has a good point on the flirtation with secularism.

CATHOLIC CAUCUS Ping List ping.

(Please send me a PM if you would like to be added to or removed from this new CATHOLIC CAUCUS Ping List. This list will be used primarily for pings to CATHOLIC CAUCUS Religion Forum threads, but also on occasion for other threads of interest for orthodox Catholics.)

Is there an Orthodox Caucus ping list? If so, it would be good to ping this one.

The Orthodox and the Catholics need to stand together against the enemies of the True Churches, both foreign and domestic.

Well, he’s right. Protestant churches have officially adopted secular standards, and Protestants who don’t agree can only do one thing: leave. They usually leave to found their own churches, because Protestantism has a kind of centrifugal force built into it.

The big problem with the Orthodox Church now, as ever, is the temptation to get sucked into local nationalism. The resurgent Russia is no longer trying hard to drive the Orthodox Church out, it is trying to use it for its nationalistic purposes.

The big problem with the Catholic Church was that it was so weakened and intimidated after Vatican II that it ceased to trust in or assert its truths. But BXVI is changing all that.

All of orthodox Christianity uniformly and universally condemns abortion, divorce and remarriage, homosexuality and contraception.

Any “church” that deviates from this moral theology orthodoxy is by definition liberal.

Ah, now, who ordinated Mary as line of ascension? Secular acceptance, look where saint Teddy and mommy Pelosi are taking this nation.

I see it's an open thread, and the antis seem to lie in wait to see how quickly they can pounce; but, one can at least hope for proper grammar.

sigh

I’d say half the Catholics in this country are flirting with secularism.

You’re right. All branches of the Body of Christ are under attack by Satan and his minions on the Left. There are Protestant churches which have caved in, but there are also the “Catholic” churches like the ones frequented by John Kerry and the Kennedys. The Protestant churches who oppose abortion have more in common with the great Benedict XVI than they do with liberal “mainstream” Protestant denominations.

Ah, now, who ordinated Mary as line of ascension?

John 19:27.

In Luke 1:28, the phrase "full of grace" is translated from the Greek word "kecharitomene." This is a unique title given to Mary, and suggests a perfection of grace from a past event. Mary is not just "highly favored." She has been perfected in grace by God. "Full of grace" is only used to describe one other person - Jesus Christ in John 1:14.

You are close in the grace from a past event. but there could only be on person, a female to fulfill the already foretold prophesy of a virgin conceiving... Paul continually refers 'some' predestined from BEFORE the foundation of the world (age). See now the doctrine is filled with big holes when only one or two Greek words get fully translated as to the intent of their usage.

IF Mary had a 'past' event so did the rest of us born into flesh bodies.... John 3 describes the requirement for any to just see the kingdom of God.

The lies of liberalism have made a full assault on mainline Protestant and Anglican churches. Within those bodies and traditions are courageous men and women who are standing up and fighting back. And they are starting to win against entrenched liberals backed by trust funds and expensive lawyers.

The Catholic church is America would be in great shape if only half of the Catholics were flirting with secularism. I am afraid that the great majority of American Christians are doing a lot more than flirting with modernism.
