500 year-old monstrance to be used at 2011 World Youth Day

Madrid, Spain, Jul 13, 2010 / 03:07 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pilgrims attending World Youth Day in Madrid next year will see a monstrance from the 15th century that is known as “the finest example of Spanish silverwork of all time.” The Monstrance of Arfe will used during a time of Eucharist adoration led by Pope Benedict XVI at the international youth gathering.

According to a press release, the monstrance “is popularly known for being used during the Corpus Christi procession each year in Toledo.  It measures almost 9 feet tall and is made of gold and silver.”

Francisco Portela, professor of Art History at the Compultense University of Madrid, said the monstrance “is the finest example of Spanish silverwork of all time” and underscored that WYD would be a worthy occasion to bring the masterpiece to Madrid.

Juan Sanchez, the dean of the Cathedral of Toledo, where the monstrance is kept, said, “We were pleased to allow the monstrance to be used for WYD, knowing that it will be used for such a great purpose.”

The origin of Eucharistic monstrances dates back to the 13th century with the establishment of the feast of Corpus Christi.  They were developed primarily in Flanders and Germany, where the Arfe family had its origins.

The famous Monstrance of Arfe is the masterpiece of German silversmith Henry of Arfe, who finished it in 1524 after nine years of work.

The Eucharistic adoration led by the Holy Father will take place on August 20 at the Cuatro Vientos Airfield, where the vigil will be held on Saturday night.  Young people will be able to “contemplate and admire a work of art that is unique in the world and is being used as its creators imagined, and they will rediscover the value of art in the liturgy,” organizers said.

Nice Picture!

Odd how it looks just like the BOP in the Gulf Oil Spill.

I wonder if the single RAM approach they have in the Monstrance works better than the double and triple RAM used by BP?

At a time when it's parishioners were dying of hunger and disease, the Catholic church was dunning them for more tithes to build this edifice to it's colossal ignorance of the gospel of Christ.

19And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God, the golden altar also, and the tables whereon the shewbread was set; 20Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps, that they should burn after the manner before the oracle, of pure gold; 21And the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, made he of gold, and that perfect gold; 22And the snuffers, and the basons, and the spoons, and the censers, of pure gold: and the entry of the house, the inner doors thereof for the most holy place, and the doors of the house of the temple, were of gold.

So you think the Roman Catholic Church is likened unto Solomon’s temple? suddenly this is beginning to make sense to me. You seem to believe you are Israel. Am I understanding this correctly?

NYers was sufficient for most, but these old, old, eyes just don't see like the useta. And as far as it looking like the BOP, it just might be the ONLY way we stop that spill, by praying to the Host in the Monstrance. :)

No. What I'm pointing out is that God was present in the temple, and He requested gold, did He not?

The Body of Christ, present in the Eucharist, is reserved in the tabernacle. Thus God is accorded the best we can offer Him, which is gold.

Very interesting. Because I thought the best we can offer Him is belief in the Finished Work in Christ.

One of the great differences between us is that for two millennia, we have acknowledged Christ present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist. In fact, I was earlier looking at a chalice from the 13th. century that looks no different than the one my pastor uses today.
Is not man’s best to be offered for God, just as they did, at God’s instruction, in Solomon’s temple?

Wrong. That's what he offers us.

He doesn't offer us BELIEF in the Finished Work of Christ. We believe what He says.

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory whiat I preached unto you, unless ye have BELIEVED in vain.."(1 Cor. 15:1-4)

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have BELIEVED in Jesus Christ.."(Gal. 2:16).

"That we should be to the praise of His glory who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye BELIEVED ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise." (Eph. 1;12,13).

I'm pretty sure I have no idea what you are talking about. The free gift of salvation is offered, but in order to receive the free gift we MUST BELIEVE.

I'm afraid you have a faulty source there -- in other words, not a very good dictionary.

Here is the acutal meaning from a Catholic source:

MONSTRANCE (emblem)

A symbol of the Blessed Sacrament since the monstrance is the sacred vessel which contains the consecrated Host when exposed or carried in procession. It is a well-known emblem of St. Clare, who is reported to have repulsed unbelievers who assaulted her convent of nuns by presenting to their gaze Christ in the monstrance. St. Peter Julian Eymard, founder of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers, is symbolized carrying the monstrance and blessing the people with it. St. Thomas Aquinas has the monstrance among his many emblems as the author of the famous hymns Lauda Sion and Pange Lingua, written to honor the Eucharistic Lord. St. John Neumann, who first established the forty hours' devotion in America, and St. Paschal Baylon, patron of Eucharistic Congresses, are both represented in art with the monstrance. (Etym. Latin monstrans, from monstrare, to show, point out, indicate.)

Hard to believe that “monstrance” and “monster” don’t share the same root.
