Presbyterian leaders approve gay clergy policy

The change needs approval from a majority of the church's regional presbyteries to take effect.

By PATRICK CONDON Associated Press Updated: 07/08/2010 06:31:58 PM EDT

MINNEAPOLIS -- Leaders of the Presbyterian church have voted to allow non-celibate gays in committed relationships to serve as clergy.

Thursday's vote isn't a final stamp of approval for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) or its more than 2 million members. But it's a step that could make the church one of the most gay-friendly major Christian denominations in the country.

Delegates voted during the church's general assembly in Minneapolis, with 53 percent approving the more liberal policy. A separate vote is expected later Thursday on whether to change the church's definition of marriage from between "a man and a woman" to between "two people."

But such changes would take effect only if approved by a majority of the church's 173 regional presbyteries.

I do know whether the "majority of...presbyteries" means a simple 50% majority or requires a higher bar; nor what the majority is required for passage at those regional presbytery meetings.

The Presbyterian convention is taking place in the same ill-fated hall which held the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly...

How about voting to allow adultery, stealing, and baslphemey. I thik it is time we allow a line item veto for the Bible, that way everyone is happy.

No doubt the Presbyterian (USA) leaders know what they like.

I was saved in a Presbyterian church. The Holy Spirit left this denomination (as a whole) long ago to allow this to take place.

Don’t overlook buggery and beastiality! Everyone has their rights!

Its too bad there wasn’t any leadership amongst the lot. Good news is there is no future in being gay....so if they are expecting valuable contributions and enlightened inroads... the philosophies will be gone at the term of the gayness.

One of the tenets of Christianity is the framework of the family for continuity of civilization, the family and the faith. There are spokes in them thaere wheels for a reason!

Can they not READ? Are they using the Koran? Wait a minute, they don’t have those problems in Mooslim countries.

The overture will be voted on at Presbytery meetings. If a majority of the Presbyteries approve it, the Book of Order will be changed, and the Presbyterian Church (USA) will be history.

There is plenty of room in the ELCA handbasket, and there will probably be a lot more room after the inauguration of the NALC in August.

Glad to hear someone say it; hopefully you have found a faithful Church. We always invite you to attend a Mass, make an appointment with the priest, and sit down and talk. You’d be surprised at how many of your questions would be answered biblically!

Oh, no —the Presbyterians too?

Looks like all the major Protestant denominations are following the gay agenda now.

A very similar proposal came before the regional Presbyteries several years ago—I’m thinking around 2005 or 2006—and failed to be ratified by a majority.

Still wondering—50% or 2/3 majority of Presbyteries?

50% or 2/3 vote to pass within each Presbytery?

It really should not matter, because Genesis 2/Matthew 19 should not be subjected to a vote.

Like several other denominations they don’t read their Bibles, if they do they must tear out the pages they find inconvenient.

How very sad to see that institution descend further into apostasy.
