Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

Then again, another of my fantasies is to distill my own whiskey. I’m standing in the need of prayer ...

You'll have to move to New Zealand.

That or risk incurring the wrath of the BATF.

Thanks for doing the research!

I really think that, paralleling the post Vatican II "spirit of vatican II" destructo- theology and liturgy phase AND the ditto - "if the art is ugly and clunky it's good" phase, there was the "if the translation makes your heart sing, it MUST be wrong," phase of thought. They did everything they could to make the Chuyrch unattractive and then they say,"what happened to vocations?" wonderingly.

What's the emoticon for "face-palm"?

The NAB committee that translated it must have been on drugs in my opinion. They tried to soften everything up to ease their own consciences. Hopefully, the NAB will be the next thing (or one of them) that Pope Benedict XVI puts on the chopping....err...I mean drawing board.

PS. I post it because it has the best formatting — if only they could get the wording right. That’s why you see

the
NAB
RSV
Jerusalem
DouayRheims
Vulgate
and Byzantine
translation all on the Daily and Sunday Readings thread.

Did everyone know that all those were there??????

Yeah. Dig it. I get the tax stamps and buy a fully automatic LWRC carbine and silencers for my weapons. BATF comes to my house to make sure I'm storing them safely.

BATF: Uh, Sir? What's that?
Me: Oh nothing. That's my still.
BATF: You have the right to remain silent....

As that article from “Garden and Gun” described, the State of Virginia would be happy to help Mad Dawg legally distill whiskey.

Fr. Neuhaus (requiescat in pace) once wrote that, if a non-traditional rendering is possible, the NAB translators go with it!

Yeah, well I’m not so sure about the relationship between my words and The Word, but sometimes the silence sure comes over me.

The soul stains to hear whispers of love... accept the difficulty - it's a gift.

accept the difficulty - it's a gift.

It's the answer to prayer. It's the coal from the thurible before the Throne.

Nobody said having a vanity-ectomy would be fun.

Is this a great country or what?

Somehow, this is not the kind of self-forgetfulness I thought this thread was going to be about. But, I'm not complaining!

The following are standard items for which requests are regularly received. It is expected that, in accord with normal scholarly etiquette, use of such materials in publications, etc., will be acknowledged appropriately.

This text began as an electronic transcription by Whitaker and Parunak of the 1983 printed edition of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS). The transcription is called the Michigan-Claremont electronic text and was archived at the Oxford Text Archive (OTA) in 1987. Since that time, the text has been modified to conform to the photo-facsimile of the Leningrad Codex, Firkovich B19A, residing at the Russian National Library, St. Petersberg; hence the change of name. This version contains all 6 of the textual elements of the OTA document: consonants, vowels, cantillation marks, "paragraph" (pe, samekh) markers, and ketib-qere variants. Morphological divisions may be added later.

The BHS so-called "paragraph" markers (pe and samekh) do not actually occur in the Leningrad Codex. The editors of BHS use them to indicate open space deliberately left blank by the scribe. Pe ("open" paragraph) represents a space between verses, where the new verse begins on a new column line. This represents a major section of the text. Samekh ("closed" paragraph) represents a space of less than a line between verses. This is understood to be a subdivision of the corresponding "open" section. Since these markers represent an actual physical feature of the text, they have been retained.

The transcription was based on the "Supplement to the code manual for the Michigan Old Testament" by Alan Groves.

The WLC is maintained by the Westminster Hebrew Institute, Philadelphia, PA (http://whi.wts.edu/WHI)

Sword module maintained by Martin Gruner (mg dot pub at gmx dot net).

Imported from the CrossWire Bible Society's "The Sword Project" Bible Modules.

Latin Vulgata Clementina (Clementine Vulgate)

Imported from the text provided at VulSearch

The base text is that edited by Colunga and Turrado (Madrid, 1946). Typographical errors have been corrected, and spelling and puctuation have been modernized. It is believed that the text found in Colunga and Turrado was and is in the public domain, and that only the various introductions and other editorial material would ever have been under copyright, none of which are included in this text.

Oddly, the NAB keeps the "valley" of the Hebrew (gey) instead of the "midst" of the Septuagint and the Vulgate. I prefer "valley" myself, but then I'm old and set in my ways . . . Actually, I've been pretty set in my ways since I was about 12 ;-)

Yes, I did a quick search for "גיא" and noticed that LXX does not have much consistency translating it. In Isaiah 28:1 "the head of the fat valley" becomes "κορυφης του ορους του παχεος", "head of the fat mountain"!

A holy monk was on a hilltop praying, and far below he could see people walking along a country lane: an old soldier in a tattered uniform, stumbling along on one leg, a haggard mother old before her time, staggering under the weight of her dying child, a young man, bloodied by robbers, falling to the ground and not getting up. Looking down on this terrible parade of life and death, the holy man cried out in anguish, “O God! How can you let this suffering go on? Why don’t you do something about it?”

His words echoed in the silence. And then he heard God whisper, “My son, I have done something about it. I made you!”

+ + +

So pray, everyone........someone is hurting more than you are!

Love conquers all things!

Sorry to have been so silent. I am reading Ezekiel and Augustine on bad pastors and here I am letting this thread go without giving it attention!

So, how do we deal with compliments? I've mentioned before that the average Dominican will say, "Praise GOD!" when you praise a sermon or a lecture he gave. And that seems absolutely right to me. "Praise God." If there is any good at all in my vicinity, it's because He put it there or did it there. I'm clear on that.

But recently people have been praising certain moral and spiritual aspects of moi. Somebody said that something was "evidence of [my] growth in charity."

Golly that makes me uncomfortable! It's because I SO MUCH want my own glory. I want (or a part of me wants, or a demon in my mind wants) me to be spectacularly holy and just simply FABulous (lisp optional) for MY glory.

[Maybe it would be a LITTLE better to talk about charity's growth in me? But it would probably be best to shut up about me.]

But more than that, I want it so I can know I'm on the right track, I'm "getting somewhere."

I guess all I have to do is to write that to see that I am always falling off the high mountain ridge of faith, of confidence in God, and always tumbling into the abyss of pride, worry, and despair.

It is my place, aided by God, to dedicate the next step to God, to implore His grace on it, and to take the step. I think if He gives me the grace to do just that, then He will take care of whether I'm "getting somewhere."

As I like to say, there is nothing you can do and nothing you must do to be saved ... but it's very hard to do nothing.

In related news, The Forty Days For Life begin tomorrow. I am going to post nowhere on FR but on this thread only. I will recommit myself to make this thread part of my prayers. It will be part of my fasting and prayer.

I invite all of you to prayer for the unborn, and for the poor people who are so confused that they think preventing a birth by killing a child could be a good thing.

And lets us all pray that God will enable us to heed the promise of Exodus 14:14 -- "The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be still."
