If I described to you a hit television show with deep Christian underpinnings and hidden meanings about a bunch of people being stranded on a strange island which had some audience speculating that the characters were in "Hell," what show would you say we were discussing?
Gilligan's Island, of course.
Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of Gilligan's Island, said he patterned the seven stranded castaways after the seven deadly sins but he didn't admit it until years later in his book about the show.
I'm sure you can attribute the sins to the proper characters but here they are:
The Professor Pride
Thurston Howell III - Greed
Ginger - Lust
Mary Ann - Envy (of Ginger's looks)
Mrs. Lovey Howell - Gluttony
The Skipper - Anger or wrath
Gilligan Sloth
Take that LOST!
Some have even speculated that the castaways were in Hell and Gilligan (who always wore red!!!!!) did everything he could to ensure they stayed there making Gilligan "Satan."
And you thought it was just a silly show!
Wow.. If I knew that show had such deep meaning, I would’ve taken notes!
And by the way, Mary Ann rated higher among male watchers than Ginger.
Hilarious. Actually I’ve read the Chronicles of Narnia are based on the 7 deadly sins too:
Lion Witch and Wardrobe: Gluttony
Prince Caspian: Envy
Dawn Treader: Greed
Horse and His Boy: Lust
Silver Chair: Sloth
Magician’s Nephew: Anger
Last Battle: Pride
Hey that’s interesting! And although they could make all kinds of cool devices out of Bamboo and Coconuts, none of their “Works” could get them out of “Hell”.
Maybe, but Mary Anne was far prettier.
” And although they could make all kinds of cool devices out of Bamboo and Coconuts, none of their Works could get them out of Hell”
Very Martin Luther.
But Sherwood Shwartz, the creator of Gilligan’s Island, is Jewish.
I learned a valuable lesson from Gilligan’s Island, besides how to make a radio out of a coconut.
“Neither a borrower nor a lender be and don’t forget, stay out of debt.”
Does anyone else remember the Shakespeare play?
Yea but that because equal looks but Mary Ann = low maintenance vs Ginger = high maintenance
Put me in the minority who preferred Ginger.
And to make it more interesting, Leonard Cohen tweeked the song for Gilligan’s Island ( making it more singable) and played various minor roles in the show...
I was a Ginger kid myself. As an adolescent with hormones working overtime Ginger and Jeannie were my TV sweethearts.
As for the seven deadly sins connection, I don't know. I have read a few books on the show and that's the first I heard of that. It was however my favorite show in the 60s and into the 70’s on reruns. I even now own the complete series on DVD which my 8-year old likes to watch.
“Put me in the minority who preferred Ginger.”
Why not...both? :)

Mike Brady Pride
Greg Brady - Greed (dreams of “Johnny Bravo”)
Marcia - Lust
Jan - Envy (of Marcia)
Alice the cook - Gluttony
Sam the Butcher - Anger (he’s a butcher, after all)
Carol Brady (What does she do all day?)
“And to make it more interesting, Leonard Cohen tweeked the song for Gilligans Island ( making it more singable) and played various minor roles in the show...”
Making him..... the Archangel Michael???
Also, you can sing the words of Gilligan’s Island to the tune of Amazing Grace, and vice-versa....
Seriously..... try it!!!! Got me kicked out of Sunday School.
LOL
