How to Book of Mormon is Not Like the Bible
Meridian Magazine ^ | Grant Hardy

Posted on 06/29/2010 8:28:07 AM PDT by Colofornian

Quite reasonably, the current “Introduction” to the Book of Mormon begins, “The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible.”...

Yet...we are likely to point out some significant differences as well...

...The Bible is more of a library than a single book, and there are tremendous differences in genre...

At first glance, the contents of the Book of Mormon appear to be similarly diverse...On closer inspection... the Book of Mormon turns to be entirely narrative. The whole book takes the form of a story told by narrators...but we know who is responsible for every word in the Book of Mormon. It’s either Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, or Moroni (plus a few minor authors...). This means that the Book of Mormon, as a whole, is a much more integrated and deliberately constructed volume than the Bible.

...the Book of Mormon operates by very different literary principles than the Bible. Consider the characteristics of Old Testament narrators as described by Shimon Bar-Efrat, formerly of Hebrew University at Jerusalem:

“The narrator in most biblical narratives appears to be omniscient”

“Biblical narrators do not usually mention themselves”

“Biblical narrators [generally] make no reference to their activity in writing the narratives”

“The narrators do not...address their audience directly”

“Outside the books of Kings there are very few instances in which the narrator passes judgment”

How many of these statements are true of the Book of Mormon? None of them.

Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, and Moroni are...often...participants in the stories...They interrupt their narratives regularly to tell us about their lives, their testimonies, and their desires. They worry about their “weakness in writing” (Eth. 12:23, 40; cf. 2 Ne. 33:1, 4). And they do not hesitate to address readers directly to explain their intentions,...editorial techniques,...emotional responses to...events...

I lived in NYC for over 30 years I never asked the name except other Jewish men on the radio such as Ed Koch the mayor would refer to the hair as dreadlocks.

If I recall, the technology was from Roman times and you can find examples of its use in the Coloseum.

That is not to say that Mormons haven’t done some great things but leaving out a whole lot of other information, participants and half truths, in order to bolster the wonders and power of The Church of Christ Latter Day Saints... Well...

It ain’t exactly the whole truth, much less factual.

Jesus had a bride and lost her?

Was she hot?

I’d like to meet someone who would turn down the Savior.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter day Saints is or is not be a cult depending on how you define “is”, but anyone who can find glory in the fall of man as stated in the book of Mormon (2 Nephi 2:22–25) I certainly can not agree with their views of a Holy God.

“And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen [been cut off from the presence of God], but he would have remained in the Garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; …

“And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.

“But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things.

“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy” (2 Nephi 2:22–25).

I have a negative-on-linen replica of the Shroud that my mother bought me at some antique store. I have NO idea of the provenance of it, but it is one of my favorite pieces of artwork, even though it tends to disturb guests. MrR has decided it is going to ‘live’ in the library rather than the living room (where the office entrance is).

http://www.shroud.com/menu.htm is a website that has a lot of information and also sells Shroud replicas.

is an example of a 43"x12" replica. They also have negatives:

They have full size and all kinds of stuff. Maybe your replica falls in with these. Let me know. Now, this is not an official Catholic site, that I know of, and I don't know that the Church has any ties or opinions of this site.

The eyewitness accounts are quite expressive. If the Shroud is not the actual burial cloth of Jesus, it may be the burial cloth of some saint - remember that Peter's shadow was enough to cure sickness in Acts 5: and that when cloths or aprons were touched to Paul, they would cure sickness in Acts 19:.

But again, I do not believe that the Church has ruled upon the Shroud, so I cannot recommend one way or the other. It does seem to have a presence, though...

Saundy, I’m so sorry that a fake Christian took advantage of you. It’s a terrible thing to do.

Then stop with the vagaries. It just stretches the bounds of credibility that every Christian church you came in contact with lied / cheated you. If these remembrances are true, if it were me I would question what I was doing wrong that I was constantly attracted to groups such as these.

I'd remember the exact name and place of the church and would be quite eager and willing to share it. I bet she won't even FReepmail it to us

I’m outta here to celebrate the Fourth of July with my family and friends.

Gosh Sandy don't you mean the 3rd of July?

For the uninitiated, Mormon culture here in Utah dictates that if Independance day falls on a Sunday, you have to celebrate it on Saturday. So we have idiot signs that read stuff like "Hot-Rockin' 4th - Saturday, July 3rd!"

Yes, we were recently informed by an LDS FReeper that the first sin was Cain’s murder of Abel. I don’t believe they see the fall as a sin at all.
