A NEW translation of the mass soon to be celebrated by more than 100 million English-speaking Catholics reaches back to church tradition, replacing the more colloquial and dumbed-down liturgy that was adopted by the Vatican 40 years ago.
The Weekend Australian today provides an exclusive and comprehensive preview of the changes, which are the biggest revision since Pope Paul VI approved the current Roman Missal in 1969 after the Second Vatican Council. In style, the new translation of the mass is reverential and traditional, restoring emphasis on the transcendent and the sacred, and replacing words such as "happy" with "blessed" and phrases such as "this is" with "behold".
It revives a classical style of liturgical language rarely heard for 40 years, using such words and phrases as: oblation, implore, consubstantial, serene and kindly countenance, spotless victim, divine majesty, holy and venerable, and "command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high".
Cardinal George Pell said the new mass had a "different cadence" to the translation of the Roman Missal that two generations of Australian Catholics grew up with, and which was a "bit dumbed-down".
"The previous translators seemed a bit embarrassed to refer to angels, sacrifice and perpetual virginity," Australia's senior Catholic cleric said.
"They went softly on sin and redemption."

The only opportunity a bona fide catholic can have to experience the 1928 service is to attend the anglican rite churches that are converting en masse to the RC fold.
Be warned though, the 1928 service is more somber, 20 minutes longer and more heartfelt than the current RC liturgy.

Wonder how soon new missals will be available. I’ve been looking forward to this.
The word is Advent 2011.
I attended mass yesterday at an Anglican church - my wife’s old parish. The Anglicans do a lot more kneeling than we Catholics do, but apart from some cutting and pasting, the liturgies are very close. I am just as comfortable at the Anglican church as I am in my own Roman Catholic parish. In the Anglican parish here, there are only two services, and I doubt if there are 150 persons all told. At my RC parish there are several hundred worshippers each at the six masses.
The new missals are already being worked on. They will be out in the late summer/early fall of 2011. That way people have time to get used to them before the beginning of Advent. Be careful buying the first ones published, however. Companies will rush missals to market and those first ones might contain editing errors.
Good point, the first run will probably have some bugs. I’ll have to be patient, something I am not at all good at.

I suppose, however, that the Daily Roman Missal (a joint project now between Our Sunday Visitor and MTF) and the usual publications of Catholic Book Publishing will get it right early on.
There are some odd things yet to be decided. Children’s Masses - according to a speaker I heard at regional new Roman Missal conference - they do not appear in the latest edition of the Latin typica edition. That might mean no more Masses for children. Some DREs are freaking out about that already!
Good. The so-called "Childrens' Masses" are dumbed-down and mistranslated even beyond the usual "translation". They're a disservice to he children at whom they are targeted, and an insult to all parties involved.
That’s how I look at it. Children should be raised up to the liturgy (so should adults!) not the liturgy brought down to kids.
Folks have forgotten what Liturgy is all about.
