Featured Term (selected at random):
The omen of future calamity, predicted by the prophet Daniel and referred to by Christ (Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:15). Daniel seems to be foretelling the erection of a statue of Zeus in the Temple of Jerusalem by Antiochus Epiphanes (168 B.C.). Christ applied the prophecy to the siege of Jerusalem by the pagan enemies of Rome in A.D. 70. This was to be a sign for the Christians to flee Jerusalem.

Catholic Word of the Day Ping!
Please send me a FReepmail if you would like to be on the Catholic Word of the Day Ping List.
Yes we do. Abomination of Desolation = Barack Hussein Obama and the Democrats.
It has been said that Obama when he launched his democratic candidacy..those columns he stood in front of....was a replica of of the altar of Zeus.
Whether Obama received inspiration from the throne of Satan while in Berlin or not, what he did next was astonishing. Upon returning to the United States, he immediately commissioned the construction of a Greek-columned stage from which he made his acceptance speech for his party´s nomination. Because Greek temples such as those built to honor Zeus were thought to house the patron deity, the GOP ridiculed Obama, mocking him as playing Zeus of “Mount Olympus” and accusing his supporters of “kneeling” before the “Temple of Obama.” The New York Post ran an enlightening Convention Special supplement on August 28th, 2008 with the telling headline: ´O´ MY GOD: DEMS ERECT OBAMA TEMPLE blazoned across the front cover. But it was not until blogger Joel Richardson pointed out how the design of Obama´s stage was a dead ringer for the Great Altar of Zeus [6] that Obama´s campaign managers tried to explain away the design as being a conglomeration representing the portico of the White House with the U.S. capital building. “But experts agreed with Richardson,” Gallo wrote, “it was a replica of the Great Altar of Pergamum.” [http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/printFriendly/105234

This is standard Preterism. Does this represent the official position of the RCC? The RCC is Preterist?
Most Protestants see what happened in 70 AD as precursory. I see the image of the beast, Rev. 13, which hasn’t happened yet as Revelation describes it, as the ultimate fulfillment of the abomination of desolation.
NOT BY A LONG SHOT.
That interpretation is not remotely consistent with the whole counsel of the whole of Scripture—not even the basic Scriptures about it—in context.
The Catholic Church does not have a single, mandated interpretation of the apocalyptic images of Scripture. Some commentators do take a mostly preterist position, many consider a future fulfilment to be more the point. There's a great deal of variety, with a tendency to, "Yes, this, and that, and that other thing, and maybe some more, and golly, who knows what-all between now and then. More wine, anyone?"
I don't believe Father Hardon, if asked, would have said that the past events exhausted the meaning of the Abomination of Desolation, but rather that those events were known applications of the prophecy, probably with others still to come.
He was a great man. I have his picture on the wall in my schoolroom.
I almost pinged you on this subject. LOL! But here you are.
Thanks.
Glad to read he wasn’t trying to cram it all into an ill-fitting historical fulfillment.
That just won’t wash.
NO! I don’t believe Christ asserted anything of the kind.
Everything Christ predicted except for the Temple being torn down and not one brick left on another . . .
IIRC . . . is virtually entirely, certainly mostly, yet to be fulfilled but looks very much on the brink of fulfillment.
BTW, stock up folks . . .
Some say some very dramatic . . . economic . . . festivities could take place as early as this APRIL.
**very dramatic . . . economic . . . festivities **
I agree with your first two adjectives but not the noun.............hardly festivities. But I think you were sorta joking, right?
Gas is one cent away from $3.00 here. What are you paying down there?
Sorry. I don’t pay attention. I need gas and gas up when I can trying to keep it at least half full or above most all the time.
I think it’s above $3.00
And they just closed a nearby refinery. Traitorous jerks.
You’re in Oregon? Coast or desert?
PLEASE DEAR HEART. STOCK UP. BE SAFE.
Yes, was speaking euphemistically as am not authorized to be more specific.
Stocking up would be wise. Affairs in order would be wise.
I’m beginning to wonder if that “cloud over Iran” leading to famine thing, a modern-day prophecy that’s cropped up in a variety of places, didn’t just miss a few letters, such as c, e, l and d.
SORRY, I’M NOT GETTING YOUR DRIFT ON THE MISSING LETTER.
Will send email via freepmail.
DOH.
THX.
You're right, and the history of Catholic Scripture commentary doesn't at all encourage an over-emphasis on the partial fulfillment of apocalyptic prophecy. I think Fr. Hardon was constrained by the format of this "dictionary" publication.
Much glad to hear that.
More than plausible.
Thanks.
