Catholic Word of the Day: PRECONIZATION04-08-10 ^ | 04-08-10 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

A public pronouncement by the Pope in consistory, solemnly confirming previous appointments to episcopal sees and other offices. At one time all new bishops were appointed by the Pope before such an assembly of hierarchy; however, today this is not always possible. Therefore, they must be given solemn proclamation in consistory. This preconization, not the former appointment, determines the precedence of bishops. (Etym. Latin praeconizatio, proclamation; from praeco, herald.)

Did you know this happened? Might explain why some news sources connected closely with the Vatican beat all the other news agencies with stories about new episcopate appointments.
